The Lawless Party
This is a political post. Scroll down if interested.
When Obama was president, Republicans lost their minds when Obama wore a tan suit. “He’s disrespecting the presidency!”
When Obama was president, Republicans lost their minds when Michelle wore a sleeveless dress. “She’s disrespecting the presidency!”
These same people, so filled with outrage over the most minor and silly aspects of the Obama administration, are strangely silent and even complicit with the profoundly criminal activities of the Trump administration.
Last night the Republican National Convention closed out. The setting?
What is so profoundly disturbing and alarming about this is the utter illegality of it. Using government property for a political purpose is against the law. In the history of America no president has so flagrantly used the White House as a political backdrop.
Had Obama done such a thing, Republicans would have impeached him. Last night though? They attended.
Trump could care less about laws. And the GOP only cares about laws when a Democrat is involved. Think I am being dramatic?

There have been 209 criminal indictments under Republican administrations. And 3 under Democratic administrations. 36 people went to jail under Republican administrations. 1 under Democratic administrations.
To repeat:
Republicans:
209 criminal indictments
36 people went to jail
Democrats:
3 criminal indictments
1 person went to jail
And please note the Obama administration:
0 criminal indictments
0 Criminal convictions
0 Prison sentences
But for the last four nights we were all told that the Democrats are a lawless party, and that the GOP is the party of law & order. The facts though prove otherwise.

And this, too. Every person attending last night committed a crime by being there. Then, they will spread Covid-45 across the land.

During the last four nights we all heard about how you will lose your job if Biden gets elected. We all heard about how only the GOP will bring jobs back to America. Really? On the left is a MAGA Trump hat. Made in China. On the right is a Biden JOE hat. Made in America, and by union workers. Oh, and the fireworks last night at the White House? Made in China. You know, my mother always told me how important it was to walk ones talk. But this does not matter, obviously, if one is a Republican.

Trump wants you to believe that anti-fascists (you know, what America fought against in WWII) are murdering people. But anti-fascists have killed 0 people since 1994. However, Right-winger have killed 329 people since 1994.
Bill Clinton inherited an economic mess after 12 years of Republican presidents, and an unprecedented deficit. He then created more jobs than any president in history, paid off the deficit, and created the biggest surplus in my lifetime.
This is the great gift that George W inherited. Then squandered.
This was the mess Obama inherited. He then went on the create the longest economic expansion in history, and significantly reduced the deficit.
This was the great gift Trump inherited. Then squandered. The deficit has jumped wildly, to unprecedented numbers. Note how the Republicans in Congress have not said a peep about this. Trump then wrecked the economy. The last GDP quarter was the worst in America’s history. Unemployment has more than doubled. And every indicator points to things getting much worse the fall/winter.
Yet, with all this evidence of criminal behavior, and with all this evidence of economic ruination by Trump and the GOP, they want you to believe that voting for Biden will prove a disaster.
This is called projection. You blame others for what you are guilty of.
Republicans have spent the last four nights telling the world that the Democrats are lawless, evil, corrupt, and will ruin America.
And Joe Biden might—oh, the horror—wear a tan suit. EEK!!!!!!!!
And Jill Biden might—oh, the horror—wear a sleeveless dress. EEK!!!!!!!!

Not only did they say nothing about Melania’s nude pictures, but they had Pat Robertson saying something to the effect of how those (porn) pictures showed God’s beautiful work… So they hypocrisy is strong with this party. They raked Michelle over the coals for wearing a sleeveless dress, but the current “first lady” in a porn picture with another naked woman? Crickets.
Agreed, Beth. The hypocrisy is strong.
The GOP and Trump SCREAMED about Obama signing so many executive orders.
Ignoring that George W signed more, the most of any president.
Trump, in his almost four years, has signed more EO than Obama did in his first four years.
And the GOP is utterly silent.
And the GOP lost its mind about 4 people dying in Benghazi, and raked Hillary over the coals.
But almost 200,000 dead (and counting) because of Covid-45? Largely as a result of utter incompetence from Trump?
Total silence.
Seriously? Not like Trump ordered Covid positive patients into nursing homes like four Democrat governors did. How many deaths are on Cuomo’s head? The sheer insanity of it is breathtaking.
Pat, you did just what I expect from Conservatives: You twisted reality.
Yes, Cuomo fucked up. But, that was very early when no one knew how to handle Covid-45, and when no guidelines were being established by Washington. Every governor in the nation was on their own. They still are.
However, Cuomo soon acknowledged his mistake, and changed course. Compare this with Trump: “I take no responsibility.”
Because Cuomo learned from early mistakes, New York just posted a record-low COVID-19 Infection Rate. Compare this, for example, with Republican-led Florida and Texas, where things are out of control.
Also, Pat, what you did is classic whataboutism: accusing others of offenses as a way of deflecting attention from one’s own deeds. Whataboutism is particularly associated with Soviet and Russian propaganda. Whataboutism is a favorite with Republicans.
I just don’t have the words for Trump. I don’t know how to express my disgust. I have never been more thankful to be Canadian. Get out there and VOTE this time America!
Karyn, voting has been way up since 2016. In 2018, ten million more Democrats voted than Republicans. This is why Trump is so terrified of November, and doing everything he can to fuck with the election.
And the GOP is 100% complicit.
I think a lot of Americans realize, belatedly, how important voting is.
Repubs have also relied on scare tactics. The world will end if you vote Democrat. Except they are the ones who make things a mess. 45 makes me so sick. And why isn’t he being charged for all these laws he breaks? I swear if I have to wear a haz-mat suit and crawl on my hands and knees to the voting poll I will.
I feel sorry for you guys. So many people seduced by a grifter, and so many of the Republican representatives there to support him in his endeavor.
If I wasn’t so terrified of where all of this was going to lead the rest of world, I’d cry for you. Fascism is sweeping the free world and we are all facing this kind of threat.
And in this time, when we all need that reassurance, that shining beacon on the hill has been extinguished.
In July of 2016 I had a sinking feeling that the Orange F*cknugget would use his lies to convince enough people to pull off a win. I even scheduled a vacation day on the Wednesday following election day just to give myself some time to compose myself and allow it to sink in. I hoped, I prayed, but sure enough, my worst fear came true. (And one vacation day was NOT enough!)
I am hopeful again, and the numbers look good. Joe is not my first choice, but I believe he is our best hope for moving forward. But I still cannot get that sinking feeling that 45 will do something at the last minute, pull something out of a hat, and the undecided (how can you be undecided? It’s flawed vs evil) will be swayed.
If we didn’t still have our parents around, my husband and I both would be willing to sell everything and find another country to live in (Portugal?), even to the point of giving up our citizenship.
I hope I am wrong.
Devyn my husband and I have said the same thing. His mom is still around, otherwise, we too would sell everything and go. So I pray 45 will be out.
Devyn, the numbers just aren’t there for a Trump win.
He knows this, too, which is why he’s trying to fuck over the election.
My worry is not that Trump can legitimately win. My worry is Putin stealing actual votes. Which is what I always thought happened in 2016.
I feel the same way, Devyn… I’m ready to leave and give up our citizenship. My kids are adopted, Asian and obviously first generation immigrants. Add in that we’re Jewish, and we all feel extremely unwelcome in this country right now. If the f*cknugget (great term) gets in through cheating again, all hope is lost. My in-laws and parents are gone now, though our siblings are still here… and it would kill me to lose the ability to see them, although with how distant they are, and Covid… I can’t see them anyway. My entire extended family is very diverse (race, religion and sexual orientation – we have EVERY segment of society) and I’m afraid for all of us.
Wow how many wall you could have completed but you decided to waste our time with this. One word to you KARMA
Stop following Ross if you don’t like him. It’s that easy.
Trudy chose to scroll down to read a political post.
Note, too, how rather than factually refuting anything I wrote, insults were thrown.
Could you repost this in English? My gibberish translator is broken.
Trudy, I’m sure you wasted some time reading something that you KNEW (due to Ross’ prior posts and warnings) you would disagree with, and responding to it. Those of us who are worried about losing the country we have loved, and seeing that our government is descending into fascism do not feel this is wasted time at all. If you’re one of trump’s followers who would scream “12 MORE YEARS!” at one of his rallies, then you’re part of the problem.
My mom is/was Canadian. She became a U.S. citizen while she was in college at South East Missouri State in the 1950s. My bother and I joke about moving to Canada with our long lost cousins if Americans are dumb enough to re elect that idiot again.
Ross, I wish you could work for Biden’s campaign, but I have to remember how many people follow your post and to be proud of the part you ARE doing for our country in laying out the FACTS that are the TRUTH in the way the Republicans are NOT doing ANYTHING to stop this plague that is enveloping our country. I am NOT just referring to Covid either. I am talking about the shamefully lying and deceit and cowardice of those calling themselves Trump Republicans.
And a BIG yuck 😝😲 to Melania’s dress AND undress. But better her than him!!!! Eeeeew!!!
O.k.
Another question.
How can some people see FACTS that you intelligently and truthfully present, and then refute them or turn a blind eye to documented proof of all the crap that Trump and Republicans are on record of doing?
And yes, Karma is a bitch, and the Trumpers and cowardly Republicans will get to have a crowded, maskless party with “her” in November.
How can Americans be so ignorant of TRUE facts? Of course, many sad, sad people fell for Hitler’s lies too. Think about that. But maybe some think that was all fiction too. So sad.
Conservatives are liars, hypocrites, and scumbags. I would expect nothing less from any of them.
I think this is probably a more accurate description, and the one that I’ve been dancing around for years trying to avoid. But rather than trying to argue that they are ingrained in an alternate reality, or are more susceptible to propaganda, or don’t have access to factual data to frame their opinions and ideology, I’ve concluded that the simplest explanation is probably the one that you inevitably have to go with. Liars, hypocrites and scumbags.
And it explains their devotion to the scumbag currently soiling the White House – internally they relate to personalities with these types of character traits.
Hi, Paul.
Because I live in Kansas, I can’t help but know numerous Trump supporters.
These people are not all liars, hypocrites, or scumbags.
EXCEPT for their politics, I like most of these people and think they are decent. Except for their politics.
Recently, I talked with a woman who voted for Trump in 2016 even though she didn’t like him. I had asked: “Why vote for him then?”
She replied at the time: “Because Hillary is so much worse. So, I’m gonna vote for the lessor of two evils.”
And nothing I could say in 2016 had any impact. She had been brainwashed by Fox News for 30 years.
Meeting again in 2020, I asked who she planned to vote for. She explained that Trump actually repulsed her. “The minute he comes on TV, I walk out of the room!”
But she still plans to vote for him. I gasped. “Why??????????”
She gave numerous reasons. I listened. Then I gently explained that everything she believed about Trump was not true. She asked for more information, which I was happy to give.
She looked stunned. “So…he hasn’t made America great?”
“Look around at everything that’s happening. Do you really think America is better now than it was in 2016?”
I then reminded her of how much she hated Hillary. “Do you hate Joe Biden?”
She thought for a moment. “No. He seems like a good man.”
I explained that Fox and the GOP had not spent three decades demonizing Biden like they had Hillary. I explained that both were good people.
I then said, gently. “Come November, you have a vital role to play. You can vote for a man who you find repulsive. Or, you can vote for a good man.”
She smiled at this.
I have no idea what she will do.
And this is something I find with Republicans. In my experience, Trump supporters can be divided into three groups:
1) Deplorables. I will not have such people in my life.
2) People just not paying attention. They’ve always voted R and will continue to do so.
3) People brainwashed by Fox.
I hold out a tiny bit of hope for the last group.
I have come to the conclusion that the Republicans ruin the economy, and lots of other things. Then, a Democrat is elected to clean up their mess, and the Repubs spend all their time saying “Look, we were right, the Democrats raised your taxes”, this after the Republicans gave a tax cut to corporations that was clearly not sustainable for the future.
Republicans, clearly, exist only to enrich themselves, and their buddies. Look at Mitch McConnell, worth over 30 million$$$$ today, but started with not 2 nickels to rub together. They call him “Rich Mitch”. Judging from the number of chins he has, he hasn’t missed many meals. Same for Ted Cruz, and Donald.
They keep getting fatter off our $$$$, but they do nothing for the US. My personal opinion is that we need to drop Trump into an orange jumpsuit, and send him to Leavenworth, to be executed for crimes against the United States & her people
EJ, you wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that the Republicans ruin the economy…”
This is supported by mountains of data.
Democrats are better creating a strong economy than Republicans. This has been consistent in my lifetime (born 1957). Here’s a good article detailing this.
EJ, you are totally right.
I am so scared about November. Despite everything, the polls, etc., I am scared that the worst will happen again. This quote from the Frank Bruni newletter (fabulous! everyone who is a NYT subscriber should sign up for it!) sums it up:
“My heart is broken,” he wrote. “No matter what happens in November, my heart will still be broken. Even if Trump loses, it crushes me to know that a large portion of the American population would support a man who is that mean and thoughtless. I am also crushed by the knowledge that people who I know, and thought were decent, would either explicitly support Trump or lack the moral strength to say what needs to be said.”
Thank you, Allison.
In 2016, I cancelled my NYT subscription after they did yet another front-page story about Hillary’s emails.
Emails. JFC, a total non-story. Emails!
I also called in the cancellation so I could explain why.
The NYT helped get Trump elected. And they are continuing such help, with endless stories normalizing his horrific actions, and asking that we all try to better understand his supporters. To me, the NYT is like a newspaper in 1930s Germany, posting articles asking Jews to just try to better understand Nazis.
NOTE: The NYT actually did numerous articles in the 1930s normalizing Hitler!
Living in the rural Midwest, my Democrat friends and I are definitely in the minority; most of those I know who support Trump do so over the abortion issue, and refuse to be moved on it. As I pointed out to someone this past weekend, if the Republicans REALLY wanted to outlaw abortion, it would have happened years ago. But…they know that if they do that, they lose the main reason that so many evangelicals vote them in, so they dance around it without ever doing anything about it. What else do they have to offer the working middle class? “Give up your social security and other programs so that we can make more money, and we will be so happy and rich that our huge wealth will benefit you!” Not a very convincing campaign slogan, although some people I know would buy it…
Which is complete bullshit, because conservatives have many more abortions than liberals do.
That’s actually a very good point, Mike – and I hope you’re right… because then my daughters don’t really have to worry about losing the right to control their own bodies and reproductive choices. It really IS the big reason they have that evangelical base supporting the GOP.
Ross, I wish you well with all your projects.
You will not be hearing from me anymore.
Good bye!
Oh, I’m very sad to hear this, Tura.
I, and many others, have greatly enjoyed your comments these past months.
Also, I assume you are departing because you disagree with what I posted here. If so, was there anything you found factually incorrect?
I must admit that I love the somewhat snarky response I’ve seen to those types of posts on Facebook: “This is not the airport. There is no need to announce your departure.”
LOL!!!
I’m sorry to hear this too. I’ve enjoyed talking with Tura this year, we seemed to share a lot of common experiences and opinions, politics obviously not being one of them.
I have never understood why people feel they have the right to restrict what others think; this is Ross’ blog, and it is a broad display of things, experiences, goals, and beliefs that he holds important. Together, all of those things make him the person that we admire and respect. To say that he can’t share one facet of himself because some people don’t agree would be the damnedest form of censorship, especially since this blog would not exist without him.
I look forward to the political posts; I have not always agreed 100% with every single one, but I have read them with an open mind and I’ve actually learned a lot and have changed my opinions on a few things along the way. That’s what real adults do…admit you were wrong, learn from others, expand your mind, etc.
Have a great day, Ross. Kick some shingled ass! 🙂
I agree with you Ross. I support you. And thanks for the kind words about our fabulous Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Yes NY got hid hard and fast and we had “learn” about Covid, and sometimes change course. And we did, and very thankfully we are doing very well here now.
Trump is a liar and a bully who only cares about himself and the very wealthy. Joe Biden is a decent and empathetic man who will surround himself with great advisors – Warren, Buttigeig, Inslee – so many good choices are available.
Please keep writing these posts. The voice of reason needs to be heard. And, you always give the option to scroll down, or not.
I still read the NYT daily, but now I will take a look with a more critical eye. I respect your viewpoint and you may be seeing something that I am not.
As always, thank you for this post Ross.
Thank you, Karen.
The NYT does a lot of good reporting.
They also do a lot of very bad reporting, with a weird gentleness to the GOP and an ever weirder hostility to Democrats. They downplay GOP evildoing while wildly inflating things Democrats do. You know, just like Fox does. I don’t get mad at Fox because That-Is-What-They-Are but the NYT posits itself as Liberal.
They have also HATED Hillary since the 1990s. Hatred which is irrational. They were ferocious in their BUT HER EMAILS!!!!!! all through 2015/16. A total non-story from Day 1 as there was nothing illegal about sending/receiving emails (which we all do) and nothing illegal or even wrong with having a private server (set up by the Secret Service and never hacked).
Remember, the NYT beat the drums to attack Iraq after 9/11. They shouted from the rooftops that we should attack a country which had nothing to do with 9/11, ignoring the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the process. But, the NYT was OUTRAGED when 3,000 people died on American soil. Just pure evil on display.
Recently, they did a puff piece on Jared and Ivanka. I couldn’t believe it.
