The Other House: 4

So, y’all know I have taken a year hiatus from the Cross properties to get my other houses in order and ready for sale.

I live in the Strong City house, which I have detailed previously.

It was pristine in 2013 but then after purchasing the Cross properties I ignored the house for 12 years. And ignoring big wood things left in the rain for that long will result in devastation.

This is the south exterior of room #6. It was built in the 1970s as a full bathroom. In the late 1990s, I restored the window sashes and added the siding and Dr. Seuss trim. You can see how the soffit trim has rotted and the bottom-most siding has vanished (when did that happen?) and the underlying tar paper has rotted away.

And now. I know! The change is shocking! A major goal is to reduce the maintenance of the house as this will scare potential buyers. S0, covering up much of the house in…gasp…vinyl siding seemed prudent. Two factors however might mitigate this: 1) the color. I was not about to choose white so finding this pale taupe seemed doable. 2) I am keeping the Dr. Seuss trim, which nicely overlaps the vinyl and keeps it from looking cheap.

I agonized over the colors. I am sooooooo done with the 1990s colors and wanted something which seemed fresh. The trim color may look like boring white but it is not.

It is Aesthetic White and works well with the vinyl. This is…

…white. You can appreciate the difference.

Painting the window sashes in Classic Black offered a punch to the other colors.

This all went quickly (the wonder of vinyl, and the Seuss trim held up pretty well. The soffit trim needed replacing). This bodes well for slow-motion Ross.

When I moved into the house in 1996 I was still Superman Ross but working on exterior now I have been powerfully reminded of my diminished capacity. Thus, I needed to find a way to redo the entire exterior that:

  1. Could be done in baby steps.
  2. Could be done with an extreme minimum of effort.

So, what do y’all think???????????

That looks very nice, Ross. Potential buyers will appreciate the no fuss siding.

The new vinyl and colors look fabulous! Wish you could gather up a work crew to finish the exterior in a matter of days.

The brown Dr. Suess trim looked better amd more tree-like than the white. Just my two-cents!

I think it works! I agree with Kate that the brown trim looked more organic — but it still works in Aesthetic White.

Love seeing the changes adding up bit by bit. It always motivates me to get going on my list of projects (and my piles of paperwork).

It looks great Ross, you do what you have to do to keep your eye on the prize, which is the Cross House. The brown Dr. Suess trim would not stand out and not look good with the taupe siding.

Wow! Outdoor colors really take age off of the look of the house. I look forward to your post to see what you are up to. Tim from VA

You’ve kept the whimsey of the trim, but made a practical choice with the siding (which will, as you say, hopefully appeal to buyers). It looks great!

Looks good and goes well with the beige and white theme in the interior.

I wouldn’t stress over the vinyl. I’m sure buyers will appreciate the low maintenance as there will be no painting and maintaining wood siding.

      Mary! Where have you been?

I’ve been busy sewing. I’m taking two online courses through ZOOM and they meet from 3-5 times a week. Last one is end of the month.

Plus the weather has sucked and I don’t feel like doing much in the heat, but I have to at least go out and water.

Just not enough hours in the day or days of the week.

Hoping to get back to normal by Easter.
