The Other Justin…Commences

The other day I posted about new oak arriving at the Cross House so repairs to the upstairs flooring can begin.

Originally, the first-and second-floors were covered with wall-to-wall carpeting. On the second floor, it appears that oak was laid down in 1929, when apartments were created on the second floor, and numerous bathrooms and kitchen were installed.

During the ensuing decades there was a lot of damage and all this needs to be repaired.

For example, in the Octagon Bedroom, the flooring in front of the fireplace hearth was damaged by a persistent roof leak. The oak shrunk and buckled. It looks worse in person.

Today, The Other Justin tore up the damaged oak! Squee! I have been working with Justin since 1998!

In the Round Bedroom, a disused HVAC duct needs to be covered over.

Ditto here.

Also in the round bedroom, a persistent roof leak damaged the flooring in front of the hearth. Justin has tagged the oak which needs to be replaced.

And there’s more. Much more. In the servant’s room in the SE corner, 3/4 of the flooring will be replaced. In the Long Bedroom, the original walk-in closet, later enlarged into a bathroom, lost all its flooring. It now has a new subfloor, and Justin will install new oak. When the work is complete, everything will look like nothing was done.

When all the work is complete, the flooring will look great for the first time in nine decades.

Ross excited.

    Hi Ross.
Are you allowing the new floor to sit in the cross house at it’s more normal temps for a little while, or are you proceeding with install right away?

    Yeah for progress!

The new oak is kiln dried, Jackie, and with a moisture reading about the same as the old flooring. Justin has been doing this for many decades.

Squee! Very happy you’re making progress on the inside of the house while the temps are cold outside. This isn’t just a Baby Step(TM) — this is a Big Deal.
