The Sky Is Falling. Really.
The ceiling looked fine.
But, in pulling off the dangly bits, I could see that it had been repaired many times previously, and the whole covered with a thick sorta wallpaper.
It looks like all the plaster will need to get removed, or reattached to the lath.
I had not anticipated this.

I had that happen suddenly in a front room ceiling. I cut the loose plaster back, and then secured the edges with screws and washers. Filled the empty space with 3/8 plasterboard, taped and mudded the joints. looked really good when finished, and was quick – had to be, with tenants in the space.
Wow you must own an old house same as myself. At the moment I have fallen plaster in the bathroom and in the front parlor. The first probably old age and the other antique plumbing. I sympathize with you.
I’m just glad that the sky of the Carriage House is the one falling, and not the exquisitely and intricately painted ceiling of the main Cross House parlor or library!
Oh, dear. That’s not good. Hard to tell but looks like a lot of the plaster has come away from the lathe. So much so that reattaching it with washers and screws may not be cost effective or safe in the long run. Perhaps some blue board and some new plaster.
If you do replace it all, that gives you an opportunity to do some wiring for additional lights if needed.
Oh, my! Looks like all that was holding it up was the wallpaper, and it finally gave way.
Another challenge for Ross to overcome. And he will.
My heart stopped when i saw the top of that light fixture dangling.
Better to correctly fix a problem now before everything else is repaired and then all of the sudden its an issue in a close to finished room. Sorry that its another repair to do though!
Seal up the doorways and take it down. I’m surprised that you’ve managed to keep as much plaster as you have.
Oh dear… on the positive side, you’ll get to see the ceiling’s guts.
Also yikes that the light fixture wasn’t really secured to anything but the top level of plaster & a wire hanging through the ceiling boards!
On a positive note, nobody was under it when it fell. 🥸
