1976.

1: Cross House. Note garage behind, now gone.

2: Fabulous 1880s house, comparable to Cross House, demolished by city about 15 years ago for a parking lot even though it was in good shape. Sigh.

3: Gone.

4: Gone. Replaced with a 1980s banal building.

5: Gone.

6: A&W drive-in restaurant. Cool. Gone though. Now a car wash.

7: Gone. Charles Squires lived next door (house to right, extant). Squires also designed the two adjacent house to right.

House number 5 burned, I had friends that lived there when I was in college. I remember seeing in the windows of house number 2, the trim and mantel that I saw was fabulous. I dreamed of living there and then it was gone for a piece of asphalt how sad.

Thanks so much Ross for the time travel capsule. Appreciate Ken’s comments about #
2 & 5. So sad about destruction of beauty & history for parking lots. What was that song, paved Paradise & built a parking lot…. (Big yellow taxi?)….

Ken is right #5 burned down, it was a plumbing accident. Number seven also burned, it was thought to be the oldest house in Emporia at the time. Number three was moved to ninth street around Wiliam Allen White school
