Turning 69. Poo.

Friday was my 69th birthday.

How the fuck did that happen?

In any event, I invited my local family of choice to join me at the Cross House for dinner. They bring the food, I supply champagne and wine. They are kindred spirits, and we are all on the exact same page politically. While I have friends across the globe, the people invited on Friday are local and I see or talk with each all the time. I did not invite one dear friend, a fabulous person I adore, because he never ever discusses politics. Thus, I was not sure he would be  good mix.

I feel blessed to have such highly intelligent, highly informed, good and decent people in my life.

This was our third time doing this. I love love love it.

There is certainly nothing gay about the table settings.

L to R, front: Sarah, the birthday boy (trying to do jazz hands), and a very grumpy-looking Oggie. L to R, back: Denise next to her husband, Rich, a radiant Linda (wife of Grumpy), Suzi (who has gifted the house with fabulous bat art), and the globally famous Dr. Doug.

Sarah says HI!

Happy Birthday, Ross! So lucky to have met you through your blog. Wishing you many more happy years to come.

And Hi, Sarah! *waves to Sarah.* Sarah and graduated from high school together. She is one of the unsung heroes that makes Emporia a great place.

    Love you both!

      Hi, Barb!

      Agreed, Sarah is a wonder!

    Happy belated birthday, Ross!

I love having met you through the blog! We’ve become such good friends in spite of distance.

I hope you had a lovely birthday celebration

So lovely. So fun. So refreshing to say and be who one is, knowing it’s all ok. ❤️

“Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Ross” May you have another 69 years. You made your birthday celebration a political kaffee klatsch, which is your right. However, I am friends with Democrats, Libertarians and Republicans and political agnostics. I like the company of people that don’t think like me, and I have tried to develop a thicker skin. “Gott segne dich und dein Haus reichlich, Ross!”

    • Ross on February 15, 2026 at 7:42 pm

      Michael,

I do have friends who don’t think like me.

But, for my birthday dinner, I want to be surrounded by intelligent and kind people. So, that would exclude any Republicans.

      And Libertarians? Please.

      • Michael Bazikos on February 15, 2026 at 9:33 pm

It must be scary up there on your lofty moral perch. But I know you are not alone. Bigots who are convinced of their moral superiority are all too common and I assume it must be its own reward. Goodbye.

        • Ross on February 15, 2026 at 10:20 pm

But Michael, I thought you liked people who don’t think like you!

          • john feuchtenberger on February 15, 2026 at 11:39 pm

            A touch, a touch; I do confess’t.

            Well said!

          • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 2:19 pm

John, I had to Google that!

            Oh, you are good!

Happy belated 69th birthday, Ross. You have brought so much happiness to so many people. Thank you for being you.
Your table setting? Très chic, dahlink.

    • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 2:18 pm

Leigh, you make my bald head blush!

Happy belated birthday Ross, a fabulous way to mark the day, looks like a lot of fun.
My, my, politics at the table? You’ll be talking religion next!
I’d love to have been in the mix x

      Oh, you tantalize so, sir!

  13. Julie on February 16, 2026 at 9:26 am

Happy Birthday! Your party sounds perfect!

I’ll be 64 soon, and offer this:

It’s weird to be the same age as old people

    • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 2:15 pm

      I know, Julie! Soooooooo weird!

  14. Myra Malkin on February 16, 2026 at 9:33 am

Enjoyed that last comment. I’m very old, but still find myself giving up my seat to people who I realize must be quite a bit younger than I am. They’re “old people,” I’m just me.

    • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 2:14 pm

Thank you, Myra, for the amusing comment.

  15. Derek on February 16, 2026 at 10:44 am

  19. Robin Biddle on February 16, 2026 at 6:48 pm

Happy belated birthday Ross!. 69? You go with your bad self!! You will rock it! I have found myself shocked to be 74 next month. My daughter says that I am just a young person who has gotten crusty. I will own that. Lol. You avoid being crusty by all of your lovely projects and bravo for that!!

    • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 9:58 pm

Thank you, Robin. Or should I say: Thank you, Ms. Crusty.

  20. Cindy Belanger on February 16, 2026 at 7:32 pm

Happy belated birthday Ross! All that you have accomplished in your 69 years should make you proud. I haven’t been on the computer much these past few months, I have been reading, but not commenting. I was so relieved to see that you are going to keep the Cross House, after all the work you have done, you deserve to live there for many, many years. My husband passed away in October, so I am selling our beautiful Herring House and moving back to Wisconsin to be with my kids and granddaughter. I am looking for a smaller old house and yard that I can manage. Wishing you many more happy years.

    • Ross on February 16, 2026 at 9:57 pm

Thank you, Cindy. I’m so sorry about your loss. BIG hug!

  21. Candy on February 17, 2026 at 10:50 am

I love this. Happy HAPPY birthday dear Ross. Thank you for sharing your life with us. To many more!

    • Ross on February 17, 2026 at 10:56 am

      Thank you, Candy!!!

    69, NICE!
Happy lap around the sun to you, Ross.

bigot noun : a narrow-minded person who obstinately adheres to their own opinions and prejudices
especially : one who strongly and unfairly dislikes or feels hatred toward others based on their group membership
    As for mr. Bazikos
The key words here are AND UNFAIRLY
When the group holds such abhorrent views and performs such horrid actions, it is the only reasonable option and fairly earned.

    • Ross on February 17, 2026 at 1:52 pm

      Thank you, Jay.

      I will add:

bigot noun: a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion

      Unreasonably being the operative word.

When a political party takes money from the poor to make the super rich even richer, and when same party murders mothers and nurses with impunity, and when same party murders fishermen, and when same party is grabbing tens of thousands of people (including children) off the streets and disappearing them, and when same party is protecting pedophiles….just to name a few horrors…my not wanting people at my dinner table who support these horrors can hardly be considered unreasonable.

While Michael is not likely committing such horrors, if he votes R, he is supporting such horrors. As is every R voter.

Also, long-term readers well know that I’ve no issue with people who disagree with me! Goodness, if I did, I wouldn’t have Dr. Doug at my dinner table!

Happy belated birthday! Looks like a good time was had! On to many more! Hugs

  25. Karen Spencer on March 17, 2026 at 9:04 pm

Belated Happy Birthday Ross! More than a month late, my fellow Aquarian. Obviously I have been side tracked. Apologies. So glad it was a good day. Wishes for a wonderful year and big hugs to you.

    • Ross on March 17, 2026 at 9:09 pm

      Thank you, Karen!
