I have done a series of posts about…the bat.
The bat has been elusive, nay, shy about being photographed.
But today I was able to capture a glamour shot.

I am highly wary of the bat, but love that it has taken up residence in a crevice of the Cross House.
For these past few weeks it must be thinking: I wish this bald creature would STOP making a ruckus around my roost!

Very cool! It is unfortunate that bats are so maligned. It’s refreshing to see your kind and lighthearted attitude toward your skin-winged guest.

Bats are wondrous mosquito vacuums!! This is especially important because of the things like Zika. However this particular bat seems to be particularly drawn to his/her crevice on N side of Cross House. Also very amenable allowing Ross to get his work & projects done!! North facade work is amazing Ross!!!
Oh no no no no. Bats aren’t gross at all. Bats are fuzzy cute little creatures that eat bugs. They especially eat mosquitoes by the tons. They are unfairly maligned for carrying rabies (they can, but it’s not as prevalent as you’re told) and for just being generally associated with violent, vampire-like behavior. We put up a bat-house in our yard specifically to draw bats and we’ve seen the mosquito and fly population go way down!

Ross, be glad it’s only one bat. We paid a professional company $1700 not long ago to evict about 30 from an attic vent. Let me just say the constant chirping from 30 of them will make one think less fondly of them and that’s not even mentioning the mess they make.
Ross I only wish we had more bats in my neighborhood. They’re great for controlling mosquitos as I’m sure you’re well aware of. We have so many of the pests by my house, I get bit just walking from the front door to my car! No joke!
you didn’t celebrate you blog anniversary on the 17 August, 3 years now and I have been reading at least 18 months, following your adventure. Do you feel like doing a 3 year summary for us?
Dear Linda: there is a wonderful synopsis 7/30/17 called “The Beauty of a Crispy House” & where Cross House was over the years & where it is now. I thought it was a lovely update. However Ross may want to do a specific blog anniversary post.
I vote for a bat house so Me/Ms Bat will roost either north facade or the bat house & not the attic as Jonus warned. Me thinks the Cross House bat is a solitary bat & not a groupie. Who knows how long the roost on the north facade has occurred??
Bats migrate, following the food. Were there are bugs there will be bats. Females set up nursery colonies together and the males hang out in small groups or as singles. Probably as food sources dictates. I would guess there is a large street light on the corner? Perfect for attracting night time bugs.I doubt there would ever be a large colony of bats at the Cross House.
They can eat their weight in bugs each night if that is the kind they are. There are also fruit bats, but I think yours eats bugs. I’m sure someone local would know what kind it is. But they are good to have around as whatever they are eating you do NOT want around. As long as he’s roosting outside you’re good. Make sure every crevice and hole in the house is sealed as you don’t want him (or squirrels, mice, birds, etc) taking up residence in your many attics and crawl spaces.
