I have to admit it is lovely. I couldn’t picture it the way you did. Very warm and inviting. What room will you be doing next?

So many intriguing elements in that parlor! It practically starts talking on its own. I like the variety of seating shapes and options — all of which look inviting to sit on.

Absolutely beautiful! I do wish that the curtain placement be a tad bit different. Would you consider shortening the rod so the side window trim would be visible????? I think it would be awesome to see the side trim.

Ross, it really looks great…I have to admit that I doubted a couple of things during this process, but I guess I’ve learned my lesson about that, LOL! Everything in the picture looks like it belongs in the room. The combination of the architecture, the colors of the room, and the furniture, all remind me of the 1950s and 60s. At that time, many people still lived in the same houses that they had moved into at the turn of the century, and over the decades had made changes to their homes with new, modern paint colors, mid-century furniture, etc. I believe that you wrote once that you wanted the Cross house to look like a family home that had developed over a long period of time, and that is exactly what you have accomplished. Well done sir, well done!!

BTW, how about some pictures of the finished room at night? It will look totally different with the chandelier and lamps lighting the room. And a night picture from the front yard of the stained glass with the light shining through…

    I. Love. Everything. About. This. Room! The coffee table and the beautiful sofa make the room look so sophisticated.

Wow Ross, this is incredible, sorry I am late to the party. I discovered your blog a few months ago and in my free time have been reading to catch up. I am a historian and costume designer, I had always loved the clothing progression from the Victorian era and it was my favorite period to research, design, and create. Yet until I stumbled onto your blog I never thought much about restoring, researching, or designing the houses. My Dad was a contractor and when I was little he bought and restored a victorian in Chicago that I loved, so I’ve always dreamed of being in one again but only as a passing thought. Now my boyfriend, myself, and our 5 furry children are on the hunt for our first house, and trying to find one that we can start lovingly restoring the way you are the Cross House.

You have completely inspired me and we actually had our dream house lined up before it was taken over in a bidding war. I hadn’t read your posts for a few weeks because I was in such a dark mood after this. I picked up again today because you always find a way to make me laugh and I was rewarded with this gem of a room. Everything you have done, and continue to do is so exceptionally well thought out and researched and conceptualized. And you don’t hesitate to make the bold choice. I cried when I saw how beautiful your parlor turned out and hope I can do a house justice like this someday. Thank you for this blog and sharing so much of your life and restoration with us. I know this might get buried in your replies. I’d been nervous to comment before now, preferring to enjoy in quiet but I wanted you to know the difference you have made in my life.

I truly appreciate all the time and energy you put into not only the house but your blog and to us, your readers.
Wishing you the best from North Carolina!

Very nice to meet you, Lauren!

And thank you for the many kind thoughts.

Please let me know when you find your dream house!

      BIG hug!

      Ross

Beautiful but concerned how the cloth on sofa may fade with west sun coming in the windows!

    • Ross on December 8, 2022 at 12:07 am

      Hi, Tracy!

99.9% of the time the curtains are closed as are the wood blinds. In short, the parlor is almost always DARK.

      This protects all the fabric.
