MORE Finials!
This is the “famous” circa-1932 image. The octagon finial can be seen to the left. It has been newly recreated. Now, see the one on the right? That is the tower on the carriage house. It had a finial, too. It no longer does. But now I want one. I really really want one. I want one bad. (Courtesy Mouse Family archives.)
This is an original 1894 drawing. Three finials are shown.
- The large center finial is for the turret of the Cross House. It has just been restored.
- The finial on the left is marked “barn”. The barn, I think, was the one-story north wing of the two-story carriage house. It had a large ventilator on top, and I suspect that is where the finial was (see drawing, below). In 1921, the north wing was detached from the carriage house, rotated 90-degrees, and became the east wing of the carriage house. In the process its ventilator was replaced with a sun porch.
- The finial on the right sure looks like the finial on the carriage house tower, as seen in the above image. In the image the finial is missing its weather vane.
The drawings are not absolute. The turret finial As Built is a bit different than As Drawn. The same with the newly recreated octagon tower finial.
But, between the image above, and drawing, I think the lost carriage house finial can be recreated!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow, I will try and get a better image of the drawing. I have also requested a quote from WF Norman. It has been just wonderful working with them! I never want it to end!
In this circa-1910 image, the “barn” of the carriage house can be seen, far right. You can see the large roof ventilator. It appears topped with a finial. And I suspect that is the one shown in the above drawing, on the left.

Though not as drawn, I totally see a squiggly vane on the carriage house finial in the photo – you do not?

I see that too! If I zoom in quite close, I can see where the branches stop and yet, curiously, there is still a dark slice above the finial…
or is that what I want to see?!
What is up in the tree? Is it a bird house? Right top corner of tree.
I always assumed a UFO.
My guess is the UFO is the remains of a box kite that attacked the tree branches and lost the battle.
To me it looks like the Blue Print says Dorm, not Barn!? Maybe you can see it better than my image. But I don’t see Barn. The a looks like his o’s.
