A Hunt For Hardware

in 2022, Aaron donated four 5-panel doors to the Carriage House.

And he…squee!!!!!!!!…included the original hardware. Which Cody cleaned up.

The four Aaron doors.

I have since purchased four doors from Augie.

The Augie doors came minus hardware. Poo. Two of the doors (left) had rectangular backplates (2-3/16 x 7). The adjacent door had surface-mounted hardware. The right door also had a rectangular plate, but wider than the other two (2-3/8 x 7). My plan is to replace what the doors had originally. NOTE: I just noticed that three of the doors retain their all-important locksets!!!!!!!!

What the lost rectangular hardware perhaps looked like. This is what I will be looking for.

This is the sole remaining original door in the house, which appears to retain its original hardware (the knob is brass, painted).

The hardware removed.

The back plates have no identifying information.

Today I noticed…for the first time…that the original door has this curious repair job. WHAT happened?

In short, while the Carriage House will have 5-panel doors throughout (as it likely did originally after its house conversion) the hardware will be…diverse. And I am fine with this.

You might want to check out Nostalgic Warehouse. They have reproductions, sets, backplates, knobs and they even have mortise locks.

I’ve bought some things from them for my house. The quality is quite good.

Ooo, you’re so good at restoration improvising, I’m sure these doors will look fantastic when you’re done.

I’ve discovered, even restored hardware is worn and finicky. Rather than obsess over actual period hardware, I have opted for new reproductions. House of Antique Hardware has a wide variety of styles and finishes. You can also get as many as you like in the same style and finish and they work great.

If a particular door needs reproduced, new “antique” hardware is easily installed and replacement parts are readily available at the hardware store.

Having said all this, I know this is not an option you will choose.

Doug, I’ve no issue with new hardware.

I’ve already perused the Rejuvenation site.

I love the diverse hardware – hex doorknob? – yes, please! The carriage house holds it’s own with it’s “older” stepsibling. The top part having been rearranged to sit atop another building, celebrates a skilled adaptation. This is a new creation, with it’s own unique style & strength. Hats off to a charming eclectic bungalow! 💜

Diversity is good, whether it be people or hardware. I’m sure the Carriage House will be accepting.
