CH: Day 29

SQUEE!!!!!!!!

At the top of the lap-siding, and just below the second-floor shingles, is this trim which I think is original. Oh, the horror. This all had to be taken down to bare wood before priming.

WhenI first moved into my house it took me four years before I could afford to paint. They had done a quick paint job after a power wash that hadn’t completely dried and no primer. So it alligatored badly. I hired the fiancé of a colleague from work and he and his helper spent a month painting my house. Three of those weeks were just prepping. They spent day after day sanding and by the time they were done almost the entire house was down to bare wood with very little paint left. I knew the original colors were white with green trim. My house is a periwinkle blue with white trim and dark fuchsia door and windows. A faux marble finish on the wood porch pillars and I put gold leaf on the upper bands. It really popped when they were done.

It lasted almost 20 years because they prepped it well and used a good quality primer before they put on two coats of good quality paint. The secret is not so much in the quality of the paint but in the prep. The next time I had the house painted it was some spot sanding, then priming and painting with that good quality primer and paint. (It was Benjamin Moore both times.) Went much quicker and it has been about 15 years and it can go another five at least.

Not afraid of that bare wood at all. Bare wood is a good thing. It is an indication of a quality prep job down well. At least it is to me. The next time you go to paint, hopefully in 20 years, you won’t be going down to bare wood. There will be a little sanding and patching and then you will just prime and paint.
