CH: Day 61

Heat-wise, Wednesday was even more brutal than Tuesday.

Quite sensibly, I stayed home in air-conditioned comfort.

Thursday though was predicted to be a bit more reasonable so I…bravely…ventured out. Note: I am of Scottish descent and, thus, genetically predisposed to dying for a good cause.

.

The ends of the top window trim had been brutally cut off during the installation of vinyl siding (oh, the horror) so I had to add to the width. Then, I had to staple on tar paper behind and where the missing siding is.

At one point I spent 10 minutes looking for the utility knife I had just used before realizing that I had put it in my pocket. I prefer to blame this on heat stroke rather than senility.

Dumb Ross.

I tried to replace the very dull blade on my chop saw (so I could start cutting siding) but was unable to remove the old one. I gave up, and put the saw in the car, with the intention of bringing it to Justin in the early evening and asking for help. But, after getting home I forgot all about the saw.

Dumb Ross.

While the heat was oppressive I managed to move yet more forward. Which is all that matters.

Friday is supposed to be 89. I might have to wear a jacket.

I’m half Italian. I am more disposed to saying forgetaboutit. But also half German so there is the work til you drop disposition. Such a conflict when one wins out over the other. I am in a constant state of not happy.

It *is* the heat. I’ve put more steps on my Fitbit having to retrace my steps to get something I forgot, went to get and then forgot again, distracted by something else.

Tomorrow I have promised myself to take the girls to the dog park. They will enjoy a romp in an area much closer to the ocean and hopefully considerably cooler than our house. I think I’ve done quite a bit of stepping these last few weeks and deserve a bit of a break so the dogs are getting a romp and when they get home they’ll get a treat as well. Tomorrow also promises to be a bit cooler than today so I may get some extra time out front. Need to start clearing and preparing the garden for seedlings. This year I am going to plant zucchini for the first time.

I’ve been stepping only in the evenings after the temperatures drop and the front yard is in the shade. I work until it’s too dark to see. It might be two hours or 30 min. but a little gets done each day. I do periodically stop and sit on the front steps to admire how far I have come, rest and cool off. Then go over in my head what still needs to be done. A lot.

I think my baby needs seven league boots.

I am hoping, now that the window has been installed, that you might reconsider and when you paint, go ahead and finish with the Cross House colors on this wall. There really isn’t any reason to delay, is there? The plywood you can just paint black and it will sorta look like a window.

Hi, Mary. I’ve previously mentioned that if I paint the first floor in the historic colors it was not match the second floor. By doing the first floor mostly white, when the scaffolding is removed, the house will visually look of one piece, but with a few select bits of historic colors. My hope is that when people pass by they will think: This house looks good again! And it seems like it will eventually be painted to match the big house. Cool!

“ genetically predisposed to dying for a good cause” still laughing at this. For giggles I googled the characteristics of Latinos and got a CDC gov site description which made me cringe and want to run out into the hellish South Florida heat to hammer on something until I pass out, about five minutes. Stay cool dear Ross.

Thank you for a chuckle and some updates. Without a Ross there is no Restoring Ross so we are all appreciative that you take care of yourself.

Yesterday was a lovely day here in Lincoln — a cool front moved through, and the day was mostly overcast with some light sprinkles of rain here and there. I had planned to catch up on tasks inside, but I took advantage of the break in the heat to tidy up the front yard and front porch. The back is still a mess, but that’s a problem for Saturday Barb.

Take care of yourself in the heat. I wish you were working on a shade wall, but of course, you’re on the west right now.

Barb! I am in the shade. That’s what the blue tarp is for.

average temp last week and next is 104 here. (briefly we will see the arctic chill of 94 on Sunday)…. I feel your pain. I don’t want to move a muscle until October.

I have to chuckle at you being unable to get the saw blade off. I’m in Berkeley California and we are fortunate to have a tool ending library.
After borrowing an angle grinder, taking instructions from a few YouTubers, I tried to cut a few nails but the handle was on the wrong side. Unable to unscrew it I went back to the library where the tool librarian struggled but was successful at changing the handle.
I struggled with changing the skill base blade but after some YouTube research learned the blade was cutting poorly due to wood resin. WD40 helped this time and I was spared changing the blade!

YouTube is a great resource for learning to do things, but best to consult a lot of “instructions” to ensure you actually find the correct way to do things. I used it to wave hundreds fixing my broken garage door opener. Turns out it only needed a new carriage/trolley. $20 at the big A as lucky me, they still carry that part after 30 years. I watched a few videos and while I didn’t work as fast I did manage to do it in about an hour. So chuffed I did it myself.

I’ll be consulting one of the videos when I make my leather bag as I really like the way they do the zipper.

Now I want to learn how to propagate roses.
