Hallelujah!
The Octagon Bedroom mantle, before. It looks a lot better now and will soon be done. Two problems were with the long mantle shelf, and another small shelf, upper left. Both were warped by decades of rain falling from the ceiling.
A trick to unwarp wood is to, when it is hot outside, lay them on wet grass, warp side down.
So, I have been doing this for a month now regarding the small shelf. But is has not been warm enough for most of this time, and there has been almost no rain.
But…after a lot of rain this week, and some heat…
…success, at last.
I now have the long shelf laying outside.

Sometimes one needs to get wood to warp the other way to get it to dry flat. It may warp back a little as it drys. Don’t install it until it drys flat in the Octagon bedroom.
