Inching Alo…OOPS

I was soooooooo excited. With all the second-floor reshingling done AT LAST, all I needed to do was reinstall the wood cove rim just under the green curved cornice. See that unfinished horizontal reddish line just under the cornice? That flange is where the cove trim goes. Easy-peasy!

But something…was amiss. The cove trim did NOT cover the flange. Huh? This had not happened elsewhere on the south facade. So, again, huh? I went ahead and installed the cove trim, and figured I would infill above it with some wood lath trimmed to size. This would not be visible at ground level.

While installing the cove trim on the adjoining wall, my brain began to process, as if waking from a coma. Slowly. In increments, bit by bit, an uncomfortable awareness dawned. Slowly.

All the while I kept installing the second cove trim.

My brain though kept processing. Then, all at once, clarity was revealed, like the curtains on a Broadway stage suddenly opening.

And the show? ROSS FUCKS UP!

The top row of shingles was not supposed to go UNDER the flange (see first image). But ATOP the flange. Then the cove piece could be installed.

This is really unlike me. I am a little worried!

When Full Impact settled in, I knew that I had to—fuck! fuck! fuck!—remove the top row of shingles, cut them down, and reinstall.

And then install the cove piece. Which I did today.

Pray for me.

I’m blaming the heat. Lol. It is not you.

And I do pray for you…especially when you are up on that scaffolding!

Oh how disheartening. But you wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you didn’t fix it, so *sigh* soldier on. You’ll sleep better when it’s done right, and that’s important! Our admiration for you grows by the day as you take care of all details. I award you the Golden Hammer Persistence Under Duress award!

They say our brains naturally help protect us… except in home renovation projects. Then they don’t care if we fuck up. Ha!

Ooh. I’m not blaming the heat — I’m blaming whatever you were listening to on Audible that day. What book or podcast was that distracting? I want to know!

    Oh man, that is frustrating!

I also didn’t even have to finish reading your post to know you’d be resolving it the hard (but correct) way, Haha!

I’m gonna blame “covid brain” No one is immune to that. I can’t tell you how many of my friends and family have told me about weird/stupid/totally-unlike-them things they have done. Sure makes me feel better about the stuff I’VE done in the past several months, including crying at the drop of a hat, getting lost on the way to a doctor appt cuz I’d written the directions down wrong, totally losing it over the death of someone I didn’t know, and various incidents of putting things in the wrong place.

This year has been a long, strange trip for everyone… cut yourself some slack!

PS: I now gauge all house “painting” jobs on yours, and I’m usually disappointed by the comparison. You are the epitome of perfectionist as far as I’m concerned.

Sheeesh. I’ve been a carpenter for 40 years and I regularly screw up much worse than this. I won’t even mention the time I shingled the wrong house.

LMAO! That sounds like a story and a half!

Hugs, Ross. Can I run the warm bath with epsom salt for you? We are glad that you figured it out before dismantling the scaffolding.

Hands Ross coffee. Sits bottle of Ohio wine on the round table by the ribbon Fenton bowl. Now and later drinks for today! It still looks awesome! Great work!

Ross, have you ever thought about a Cross House account on instagram? It couldn’t replace your blog but it would really showcase your Baby Steps (TM) method.
