I love your house.
It also appears as though you’ve painted the lower (bottom) horizontal porch roof trim board(s) green; whereas yesterday it was exposed ‘body-work.’
Just WOW. This is looking really good! Crispy, even!
We were recently told by a professional house painting business that we cannot paint fresh cedar for at least 6 months after hanging it, or paint will peel right off. Have you heard this?
I never heard that.
My cedar is at least 15-years-old.
It would seem the cedar would just absorb the paint as it s so soft & porous. I had a wood refinisher ask me about cleaning products used on my antique cedar chest— apparently alters the refinishing process. So it is curious that painters would recommend no painting on fresh cedar. Is there a difference between modern cedar & that f > 120 yrs?? I suppose your cedar is of the modern variety Ross as is Rachel’s?
Our cedar was recently purchased from a big box store. I guess it can have too high of a moisture content if it was freshly milled, causing paint failure. Another recommendation I have recently learned of is to scrub new cedar with TSP to remove the “saw glaze” and open up the grain.
Ross- your blog is a treat to read!
Wow oh Wow!!!! Ross you just continue to amaze!!! You are the most amazing restorer on the planet! Wacky & groovy 60’s wallpaper for the library— retention & homage to the 50’s (Mouse Palace motel & pink bathroom tile) to historically corr3 t paint color choices from 1890’s samples!!! I love love love love every post & look forward to them — it’s like a daily present !!! Does anybody else feel the same way?? Eric Unhnged is right crispness & continued crispness— just refreshing. Like the cold snap here in MN — just invigorating & refreshng.
inch by inch 🙂
I’m also a lover of Victorians, see none here in Az. It looks fabulous especially with the new colors and added trim color to post and other trim pieces. I was wondering if the north porch will have a post at the east end? You have done such a wonderful job. Wow!
Thank you for the kind word, Jan!
The north porch only has the one column.
Oh my, please paint that wall today. I am so excited to see it fully completed. It looks so cool, and I get more inspiration from following your site.
As happy as it makes all of us to see your progress, it must be even more satisfying for you. Each day, more bits of the house are protected from the Kansas weather. And it looks lovely! Better and better.
I think you should have features where we have to “find the differences in the pictures” like they do in the magazines!
YES!!!!
I just have an overwhelming urge to hug the house <3
So do I! But what do we hug? A column, a wall, a curved wall, a door?
I recommend a column.
I think the best hug would be a human chain of Cross House (and Ross) fans! We could easily encircle the whole house, I reckon.
Love all the work you have been doing and thank you for the update. I check every day to see your progress and I think I will one day have to come and visit you and see everything for myself. Will be a long trip from Brisbane, Australia
Hi Linda from Australia! My mom’s from Sydney and I grew up hearing about all of her fond memories and Australia stories.
The house is looking wonderful Ross.
Linda, I will roll out the red carpet for a VIP guest from Australia!
She sure is looking pretty!
