Inching Along

See the three arched windows? See the squares under the middle window? Today, I painted them in color #5. They were the wall color. The change is subtle but I am quite pleased.

I also scraped, sanded, and primed the upper/lower railings for the north porch. It will be a thrill to get the railing reinstalled! Then…the lattice is next!

And, the never-ending door refinishing continues. Never. Ending.

Ross you have truly created a beautiful house that everyone in Emporia can enjoy. I drove around on google maps and your house is one of the largest in town. How many Queen Anne Victorians are left in Emporia?

      Thank you, Wesley!

Emporia is rich with Queen Anne-style houses. And other styles!

There were three BIG houses in town: Cross House, Plumb House (across the street), and the Newman house on 12th.

Where is the “Newman house”? I was looking on Google Maps for a house on 12th that compared in size to the Cross House, but only see the Gufler Mansion (but wowza! That’s a fortress!).

          Hi, Bill!

The Newman house is long gone. I did a post on it.

Oh! My! Not sure how I missed that post! I’ve been reading all of them from the beginning, in a sort of mega-binge (in 4 days, I’ve made it to December, 2017). I may have skimmed that one because it didn’t have to do with the Cross House (other than the most obvious details that make it most definitely a Squires-designed home). Thanks for the link. (Perhaps, I should slow down, heh)

What a travesty. There are plenty of churches in the world. There aren’t enough stunning, historic homes. =/

Too bad we can’t peel the years off of ourselves the way you are peeling them off of the Cross House! 😉

Hmm. Maybe the Cross house is really the Dorian Grey house, and 150 year old Ross will appear when he is done.

Interesting, when I stripped doors I did the whole thing then went back 4 more times for the spots I missed. You get it all off in clean bands.

I wish it were so easy!

What you see is a lot of laborious back/forth, and then every inch being fine sanded. This is why I refer to it as the Never Ending door.

Well do remember that I began stripping my doors in 2013, then abandoned that job for a year and a half only to finish it right before I needed to install them.

        Hey Ross,

When I am stripping things I use a fine steel wool for the final coat and it eliminates the fine sanding.

How do you find the time to do all this? Just mind-boggling to me.

    • Ross on October 19, 2017 at 10:21 pm

I am only at the house 3-4 hours each day.

      But 3-4 hours add up!

Impressive worksmanship, Ross. As always. The door, labor-intensive as it is, is almost done with the varnish removal.

Your windows, those are the consistently cleanest that I have seen in a restoration project. Thank you for your attention to details. I salute you.
