Inching Along…FUCK!

I moved the pump-jack scaffolding! You can now fully see the south wall of the octagon tower! Also, see the window in the corner?

In trying to screw the blue metal supports for the scaffolding, the screws were clearly not, ahh, attaching to anything. I pulled off a shingle. And…there’s no there there. There SHOULD be wood sheathing.

I moved the blue support down a bit, and screwed it to a 2×4. But the screws through the 2×4 didn’t really grip anything. Fuck. I have long known that the built-in gutter above had issues, and it seems that it has rotted out the sheathing, as happened in the SE corner. So, the upper rows of shingles will have to be removed to ascertain just how bad bad is. Fuck.

Oh Ross… You do not deserve this… On the bright side, at least all the shingles look okay?
Oh…….man!!!! Gosh darn it! Not a good finding!!! I am so sorry, Ross. I would have cussed up a storm too. So much work but I am so nosey to find out just what is going on under those shingles. Not good for heating or cooling either I’ll bet. Let’s beat up that gutter!!
Also, how do you fix built-in gutters so they don’t rot out everything going forward?
Linda, the gutters were re-lined in 2015. I also plan to do additional work on this gutter. Soon!
Yikes. I am coming to Kansas tomorrow, and I’m bringing a wine delivery.
Praise the Lord!
Whoops! More deshingling. Maybe there are gold or jewels inside there?
Oh my!
Yay for Barb & a nice glass of wine!
Wow! The south side is truly a mess!
Thankfully you are on the case!!!
Oh Ross, I feel so bad for you! The things one endures for the love of an old house!!!
I really liked the idea of the hidden gutters but the more water damage you find the more I like the outside edge gutters. If they leak you will see the water dripping to the ground which is annoying and demands fixing but the water doesn’t run into the walls.
Betcha wish you were the type to be able to say, “Holes? What holes? Empty space behind the shingles? No matter, no one can see them! I’ll just replace the shingles and go on, no big deal.”
FORTUNATELY for the house, YOU are not that guy. Yes, that house is more than lucky that YOU are the guy who says, “This abomination stops right here, right now!” (Emphatic foot stomp and fist shake).
Ross, I do not envy all the work you have taken on in this majestic home. AND I am so moved and inspired that you have. Every day I read about all that you’re accomplishing and I think, “If Ross can ____ (fill in the blank), surely I can _____ .” Your photos and blog posts motivate me to keep up on all the jobs at my house more than any other words.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for not just shaking your head in disgust and saying you’ve had enough of that old house. Many lesser people would have given up by now. As much as you’ve chosen to endure in the name of renewing this house, no one would blame you if you just decided that this is just more than one person can take. AND we all know that you will cuss a bit, pick out a new book to listen to then buckle down and get to work.
You’re not just not giving up on your house, you’re also not giving up on yourself.
God bless you, Ross and may you never lose your patience, fortitude and courage to see what IS and facing it head on.
Yes, what Christine said! ^^^^^
Hear! Hear! Well stated, Christine. Give those shingles hell Ross!
Oh Ross, this sucks. You will prevail. Just another speed bump along the way. We all are behind you. Hang in there.
Yep I’m with you on that, Fuck. It will be better than new when you’re finished with it though
Ross, you exhibit amazing restraint! Keep plugging along in taking care of this grand old dame!
Just one FUCK is not enough, maybe twelve might do, but not even sure that would do!
God bless your soul, Ross! We all know new, sound, strong wood will be in place in no time!
You are so much closer to the outside finish than ever before!
And you have done it all yourself! Bravo!!! Bravo!!! BRAVO!!!
Oops ! Another sneak attack. Time to fight back !
