Inching Along…platformly

I had moved the pump jack scaffolding to the inside corner. But, I could not reach the very inside corner. It looks like one can. But one cannot.

Oh! MUCH better! Not quite finished but my 63-year-old body screamed: That’s enough for today! This all took but two hours. I had the lumber delivered, and the strapping young delivery man pushed everything up to me on the roof. Effortless! Ten years ago I would have done all that work myself.

I just love this. I can reach the entire inside corner effortlessly! I am gonna build a work table, too! Then haul up all the tools and chop saw (and cover everything with a tarp when I leave). This way, once I climb the ladder up to the new deck, I can stay until the days work is done. All the shingles to the left will be new.vNote: in the image it looks like there is only four feet between the deck and the top of the cornice. In reality it is a little over 6-feet.

Hurrah! Ross is back in his element. That was a superb delivery man to assist you with the lumber. Hugs Ross. You have a great system here. Solid footing.

Thank you, Leigh! I floated a $20 bill down to him. He was stunned. I said: “I’m sooooo grateful for the help!”

The lumber yard (Mark II) is only a few blocks away. They seem thrilled about the ongoing work on the Cross House, and are always really helpful and gracious.

Awww… they are as pleased with your handiwork as we are, Ross. Excellent proximity to the lumberyard too.

That is a great platform to work from. And so smart with the fan! Can you just use a sturdy folding table? Easier to haul out there. You will have that area done in no time.

Look at YOU! Ingenious! Looks secure too. Isn’t it great to encounter nice, helpful people like that delivery guy and then Barb for the booze too??? Makes such a strenuous job bearable! Did you already put new wood beneath the tar paper? P.S. The fan is another much needed, great idea!!

You must be one of the new eight wonders of the world! I am so in awe of you! SUPERMAN ROSS!!

I’m glad to see that your spirit has recovered from the disappointment. People are often shocked at the scale of these big old houses when they see them in person; most delivery employees stand and gawk for at least 5 minutes the first time they visit mine, LOL

Ross, I’m almost as impressed with your scaffolding and platforms as I am with the restoration!

Thank heavens for the fan! Once upon a time you wouldn’t have needed one in Kansas, but it has been downright tropical lately–hot, humid and not a stitch of breeze. It was a summer just like this that I was hand digging 12 3’x3’x3′ holes to pour piers for a porch rebuild. I hauled 3 fans outside to get me through it. Neighbors thought I was crazy.

Your photos always tell an interesting story Ross, is there a way to post video’s if you wanted to?

Please don’t give up. I’m watching in amazement at your drive and tenacity despite each kick in the teeth to bring this beauty back to her former glory. What an incredible journey you’re on & I’m cheering for you all the way!

    • Ross on July 8, 2020 at 9:15 pm

Worry not, Diane! I’ve not for a moment thought of giving up!

Wow! What a nice work surface! And you were able to get lumber which is good. I live in New York, and we just replaced our deck and had to make trips to three different yards to get all of what we needed. There was a blip in the supply, and now contractors are furiously trying to catch up so the demand is huge.

Hey, while you are up on your new tanning deck, you may want to listen to a book I am reading called, “Becoming Duchess Goldblatt”. It is so witty and funny and what the author is doing in real life reminds me so much of your blog….making people laugh, lifting our spirits, being positive and giving all your many readers something to look forward to every day!

So if I haven’t said it lately I will now. Thanks Ross. Thanks for bringing all of us along with you on your adventure and for all the smiles and laugh out loud moments you give to SO many people. You are a gift.
