Kenny Surprises With Something Curious

So, y’all know Kenny by now. He lives in Kansas City, donated a fabulous mantel clock to the Cross House, and has volunteered to refinish the wood in the Round Bedroom. Here is the mantel after Kenny worked his magic. (I have the two missing tiles.)

This morning I received a text from Kenny. He came across a Victorian-era settee nearby that was for sale. Might I want it?

The settee was…curious. I assume it had some sort of name/function but I have no idea of what this might be. It had new upholstery and the color, I though right way, would be ideal for the Round Bedroom. It also seemed period-correct to the house. And the price was very good: $100. While the wood was dark, this appeared to be old shellac and with this removed the settee might perfectly complement the refinished wood in the Round Bedroom.

While the room will be my office, the settee would look fabulous adjacent to the mantel.

I replied: Yes!

A few hours later Kenny texted me: “I bought it. This piece belongs in the Cross House.”

Wanna see the curious settee? Scroll way down…

That is so cool. I love it, and it is period to the house. I looked at that upholstery at a store just last week. I almost bought it.
I wouldn’t refinish the wood. A good cleaning and a couple of coats of bees wax will make it shine !

With a little research I found this

“it was part of a parlor set, which usually included a love seat, a two-armed gentleman’s chair, and a one-armed ladies’ chair. Furniture manufacturers made these chairs with one arm and low to the ground because the ladies of the time wore dresses with lots of fabric in their skirts, covering over one or more petticoats. Eastlake suggested that chairs be made low to the floor so that ladies could remove their shoes without having to bend over in an un-lady-like manner. The new middle class housewives loved it.”

I think the settee is amazing. Hurray for Kenny!

Does this mean we should keep our eyes peeled for a love-seat and a gentleman’s chair with this woodwork? The upholstery can always be fixed. It really is a fabulous piece.

I call them slipper chairs. Don’t know if that’s right but I like it.

Yay! I never thought I would be excited by a period settee, but over these months and years, you’ve persuaded me. It’s great!

Beautiful! Agree with others that the wood finish doesn’t all have to match. But it’s your house and furniture, so what you prefer is paramount!

Awesome settee Ross! I love the detail and the buttons.

Cross House is getting more beautiful every day. And the world surely needs beauty and betterment, which is what you do.

Thank you for the joy you bring to so many.

The color is perfect an the pattern reminds me of peacock feathers.

I’d leave the wood alone. You’d love the upholstery, plus you really don’t want all of the wood to be matchy matchy. Some of the really nice pieces like this should stand out with a different wood color.
