Magical Marble

MAGIC EVENT #1:

Five days ago I did a post about a marble vanity. Mary, who reads this blog, found it on CraigsList and brought it to my attention. She thought it seemed perfect for the Cross House.

And…it was!

The vanity retained all its components (which is unusual), it was the marble I wanted, and the size I needed. So, squee!!!!!!!!

However, it was a ten-hour drive away. So, that would be 2-days in the car, and who would take care of my kitties?

Still, it was the only perfect vanity I’d seen in five years, so I was not about to pass on the opportunity.

MAGIC EVENT #2:

While trying to figure out how to get the vanity, Celeste posted this on my blog:

I could get it to you, Ross.

I’m located [nearby] and I’ve traveled that route plenty of times to visit relatives.

I’d start with a phone call from the seller’s location with lots of photos to give you a better idea of its design and condition, then take it from there.

Or you could stop here along the way, depending on what you prefer.

Could this be true? Could this be possible? Was the real?

I contacted Celeste STAT!

I didn’t respond on my blog post because I was concerned about setting up expectations for y’all. It seemed best to keep the whole thing quiet. I was worried that the seller would just let somebody else have it. Or that Celeste could not, in the end, pick it up. Or any number of eventualities.

I was crossing my fingers that Celeste could perhaps meet me half-way, like in Des Moines, because I could be back/forth in a single day, thus avoiding the cat care issue. But—drum roll, please—Celeste wanted to bring the vanity to me! I shrieked!

So…wow!!!!!!!!

Celeste has been dying to visit the Cross House, so the vanity would be the excuse for a road trip! Road trip! Road trip! Celeste then called her friend, Cindy, and said: “You know that cool old house in Emporia? Well, want to go see it in person?” And, Cindy said: “Yes! Very much!”

MAGIC EVENT #3:

I told Celeste that I would pay for the gas, and overnight accommodations in Emporia. Plus take her and Cindy out to dinner and, of course, give them THE grandest of grand tours of the Cross House.

Right way, I contacted my friend Lacie, who has an AirBnB two blocks from the Cross House with 2-bedroom apartments. She was fully booked though! I then went online to AirBnB to reserve at my friend Grace’s house. But she had only single bedroom available with one bed. Argh! Then I checked out the Gufler mansion owned by my friends Brad and Susan but they, too had but a single room!

This is for Tuesday night! How can everybody be booked on a Tuesday night?

Then I checked other places at random but EVERYBODY was sold out for Tuesday night!

Then one place just jumped out me…

…wild! I clicked on it simply to gaze at this way cool house. As I was looking through the listing I glanced at the calendar of availability. The whole month was sold out…but…for…one…night: Tuesday, the 24th! Thinking this was too cosmic, I booked STAT!

And I then told Celeste to bring bathing suits!

An hour ago my phone rang. It was Celeste. And…SHE HAD THE SINK!!!!!!!!

I shrieked! And shrieked again!

She said the seller had been telling people who inquired that the sink was already taken! That was my biggest worry these past five days. So, whew!

Celeste showed the seller a picture of Cross House. The seller said: “THAT is where the vanity is going?” Celeste smiled and replied: “Yep!”

So, a huge hug to Mary and Celeste and Cindy and the Seller!

Celeste will arrive on Tuesday and and I anticipate doing a thrilling update!

    Aw shucks, Ross!

I know I’m not the only one reading your blog who would like to do something for you and the Cross House. We get examples of that repeatedly from those who read of a need and respond to you. I’m thrilled I got this chance. Gives me an opportunity to pay back the joy your blog gives me, and that’s a lot of joy.

    See you soon! 😁
