Punching Up Crispy

In 2017, I did a post about making the Cross House crispy again. This is a goal vital to me. But, I have been so busy this year on the endless shingle shingle shingle fucking shingle work on the south facade that I…oh, the horror… unknowingly allowed the house to become (me, bursting out crying) less than crisp.

I know! I am shocked, too!

The other day I was in the basement doing my regular vacuuming. I like a  clean basement. Then, while in the workroom, I glanced at the north lunette window. And my heart stopped. It was filthy! HOW did that happen? HOW had I allowed this to happen?

My eyes then glanced over to the east window in the workroom. It, too, was filthy.

Oh, the horror. BAD Ross! BAD Ross!

But soon…

…crispness was restored.

And more crispness restored. Whew! (Note: the wood posts are for the cat fence.)

Basement windows are normally ignored on houses, new or old. But, to me, clean basement windows say a lot.

And I like what they say.

    Hi Ross,

Your attention to detail and to light, as in the light coming through windows and landing and illuminating whatever it falls on, gives me hope for mankind.

Crispy is good. G-d is in the details.

Thank you for making one small thing better. Especially this (very long) week.

I am ashamed to admit that when the team from Thrasher came to do the work on our foundation this week, the basement windows on my house were filthy. When I saw that they’d pried them open to ventilate the basement, I realized I had not washed them in the 28 years we’d lived here, and I’d never attempted to open them. So this weekend, I’m going after those windows. And the window wells. And the leaves in the yard. At least for a few minutes, they’ll look crispy.

Well, if I’m being completely honest, all that got done today was raking. I’m hoping I have time to tackle the window wells and windows tomorrow before the wind and weather we’ve been promised arrives in Nebraska. On the plus side: The yard looks good. Not perfect, but better than it did before we raked up 10 bags of leaves.

We don’t have a house with basement anymore, but in our previous home, I kept a step stool in the basement just so I could reach the windows and clean them. It wasn’t because I wanted things crispy; I just wanted the light to come into the basement.

But, now that Ross has mentioned it, the huge windows on this house are in dire need of cleaning again. Best get to it.
