Returning To The Niche!

In 2019, I did a post about the “Bo Mystery light”.

The light was a fabulous gas pendant featuring a serpent!

The Bo light.

Serpent!

However, the light was not gas/electric, which the Cross house had when new. So, me being, well, me, vexed over this historical narrative aberration and I knew the world would not be right until I repaired this tear to the time/space continuim.

I am, thus, highly relieved and pleased to reveal my new pendant.

It’s so curvaceous! I love how it complements the arched windows!

This image is included as wholly gratuitous stained-glass porn.

Yes, the 2nd lite is a better fit but those fabulous windows remind me of fan dancers from Las Vegas 😘

Hi! This qualifies as stained glass, niche, and lamp porn. Thank you for being obsessive you 🙂

IMO, the niche can never have too much attention. 💜 I always felt the single lamp was a bit skimpy for the space. This new lamp beautifully provides substantial balance.
Now, where will the mysterious serpent find a cozy place to curl up? 🤔
Also … never too much glass porn. 😏 Liquid metal sex.

Well isn’t that just the most whimsical little thing. Much better.

I would be tempted to convert the gas element on this one. Snaking wire through it, though, would be…well, it would require wine.

Good suggestion–the always-dark gas globe will otherwise convey the sense of a burned-out bulb to people who don’t understand gas/electric fixtures. Be sure gas valve is open. I use 18-2 solid copper thermostat wire. It’s stiff enough to feed, carries enough voltage to supply a candelabra base socket replacing the gas jet.
You’re correct in requiring a medium-dry Chardonnay for the task.

I don’t normally convert my combination fixtures. It’s pretty rare that I choose to do so. Most of the pieces in my collection are the kind that take glass candle slip covers rather than large gas shades, and I don’t feel obligated or driven to convert those, as with the right glass they look just fine unlit.

I recently acquired an entry lantern with a beveled glass “cage” similar to Ross’s, and I elected to convert that one, as I felt like it was sort of a waste to leave the best part of a light like that unlit. I had to use stranded separate 18ga leads, as regular paired lamp wire was too wide to go through the gas tubing. It was a nightmare, but very well worth it in the end.

This new pendant in the niche is one I would probably drive myself to the edge of insanity to drill out, though, and get a socket on the gas jet. I think some “up” light on the ceiling of the niche would be f’n cool.

Ross: Despite the wholly gratuitous stained-glass porn, I now can’t un-see the missing reeded detail that we noticed on that one door!

The new fixture reflects some of the design elements of the windows so good.

I hope you find a new place for that lovey Serpent fixture. Could it go in the Carriage House?

    • Ross on June 15, 2024 at 8:39 pm

The serpent is listed for sale.

      • mlaiuppa on June 15, 2024 at 10:42 pm

Aw, that’s a shame. It is so beautiful and unusual. But I am sure it is going to make someone really delighted to own it and it will find an equally special place.

Much better! And the stained glass should always be shown just because.

The prettiest Niche that ever was! Now improved with period-accurate lighting! It almost makes a shamrock shape, which I personally love.

And Ross said, “Let there be light!”, and there was light. And Ross saw that yhe light was good.
