The Case of the Curious Door
In getting the carriage house basement ready for its new HVAC ducting, the door to the basement was in the way. It needed to be cut down on top by 4-inches to make way for the new trunk line.
No biggie. The current door will later be replaced by a new entrance on the north side, so having a squat door for a while did not seem an issue.
The 4-inch piece we cut off was to be screwed to the door frame, so small creatures could not access the basement. As I am a little over 5-foot, 8-inches tall, this would not prove an issue for me.
But, Scott and Justin are over 6-feet. And they…

Upper flap UP! You can see the cut-down door. With the flap up, tall people will not bang their head into a stationary block of wood at top. With the flap down, small creatures cannot get it.
I had no idea that they were doing this, and only came by just as they finished.
I have not laughed so hard in a long time.

That is a genius solution.
But being less than 5’2″ the innovation would be lost on me as I wouldn’t bother tipping up the board.
I agree! 5′ 2 1/2″ here! 🙂
One of my aunts and her husband (on the tall side of the family) used to live in a 300 year old house outside of Manchester. the doorways were all just above eyebrow height on me, standing 6’0″. I don’t know how they got used to it.
That’s for sure a genius solution! My first apartment was a very low ceilinged basement apartment, the doorways were no problem for me at 5’4 but my then boyfriend and his friends had to learn to remember to duck at every doorway. I don’t know how he just put up with it for th 2 years we lived there!
Clever. Also not a problem I would have, as a Certified Short Person (TM).
I too am a CSP, and my pantry door at 5’8 reflects this. My son is 6’3″ and not amused. He keeps threatening to cut a “head hole” above the door.
I keep telling him to stay out of my pantry!
I’m NOT going to show him this post!!!!!
If your son is still a teenager, you definitely need to keep him out of the pantry. Of course, then he’ll be in the refrigerator, which might be even more expensive . . . .
Oh no, he’s all grown up with kids of his own, so now it’s keeping the grandkids out that is fun. I don’t mind though…. my oldest grandson has cultivated a passion for sauerkraut, and I always have tons of that. He eats it right from the jar! *grin*
Clever design, Scott and Justin! The 6-footers will appreciate the anti-bang-head solution.
