The Next
At the beginning of the year my plan was thus:
- Finish the library.
- Finish the cat fence.
- Move into the Cross House.
But life came along…as it is wont to do…and smacked me upside the head with a cosmic 2×4.
At the end of April, just as I finished the Library, the city slapped me a Violation Notice, forcing me to abandon all my plans and fix up the exterior of the Carriage House. I estimated this would take three months, so I figured I could still do #2 and #3 of my plan.
Silly Ross.
This week, the very last week of the year, will see the Violation Work completed.
I am actually happy at how everything has turned out, and take immense pleasure in getting the poor Carriage House looking LOTS better.
But soon after the Violation Work began I realized that I needed a new plan for the year, and for following year (2024). I posted about the new plan in May but it seems that…for some reason…no one remembers reading it and I keep getting peppered with questions about what I will do with the Violation Work completed. I have been answering these question, including a hyperlink to the NEW PLAN post but I keep getting peppered.
So, please click here to read about my revised plans.

It would have taken 3 months if you had just slapped on some siding and gone quick and cheap to just get it done.
But that isn’t you. So you took it slow, methodical and did more than they asked and you did it to the same high standards you have done everything else. So it took you 7 months instead of 3.
I think maybe people may have thought you might have changed your NEW plan after work has progressed on the Carriage House.
So with the Carriage House violation notice taken care of I’ll assume there is a bit to do to get it up to snuff to be rented and that will go to first place. So a week or two to get the cat fence finished and then back to the carriage house. Maybe, first six to nine months of 2024? August/September are hot months for getting property rented.
Then finishing your current house. I hope we will get the same updates on your house as the carriage house. Didn’t you say it was sorta mid-century modern? I would love to see what you do with it. Hopefully it will get done by the end of 2025 since without the commute you can work faster than you did on the carriage house. Or maybe sooner depending on how much needs to get done. That means 2026 might be the year you finally move into the Cross House. Or maybe sooner if work goes faster. 12 years. Considering the shape everything was in and what you’ve done, how far you’ve come and with restrictions on time, money, etc I’d say you’ve done pretty well. A doable timeline. You may need a new pair of baby shoes as I’ll bet the ones you have are pretty worn out.
