The Suite Is Ready…almost
My very nice neighbor, Eric, and his strapping son, Christopher, kindly helped get the bedroom set into the Octagon Room. I was very helpful giving instructions: “Second door to the right!” The two made it all seem so easy!
The wash stand fits perfectly next to the mantel, and does not overwhelm the latter. It will get nice vintage towels and a vintage pitcher/bowl set. A flat screen TV will go above!
The coloring of the set goes well with the original faux finish in the room, as shown on the pocket door. The adjacent dark trim will be stripped of the dark shellac.
After some pondering, I moved the bed and like this much better! The bed is shown to much greater advantage, and the room seems larger. The scale of the set has surprised me; it is taller and more imposing in person. The only night tables which will fit in the odd space would be triangular. Do such things even exist?
They do! I would select contemporary-styled tables as I do not want the tables to compete with the bedroom set. There will also be contemporary swing-arm LED sconces directly above.
This “bamboo” table is kinda fun but too wide.
The scale of this is perfect.
I hope to have the wall up this month which will make a huge difference in imagining the room.

Hi, Ross. The set looks wonderful! I’m so happy for you that it worked out. I’m sure you’ve probably seen this treatment: One of the loveliest B&B’s in Richmond VA has a flat screen over the period mantle (Horrors!! Right?). But not in this instance. It was camouflaged by a very tasteful custom gilt frame that made everything just right!
That set is gorgeous – I’m so glad you decided on this one!
Might I suggest having glass tops custom-cut to size/shape for the dresser and washstand? Especially if you’re going to use the room for AirBnB… and not everyone would be as respectful and careful of antiques as those of us here on your blog would be. (Good reason to ONLY rent to us!)

No, but round or oval oak tables will fit in the space beside the bed. I have seen lots of them on Ebay and Craigslist.
OK, so are you gunning for period sconces to flank the mantel AND modern sconces to light the bedside tables, or are you ditching the effort to find period sconces for this location?
I enjoy the furniture much more in the room than I have at any other point since you started posting about it. I wasn’t sold before now. The color of the wood is perfect, and even with the room being reduced in size, I can’t really say that it feels cramped. It feels cozy.
Placing the bed on the angle, rather than the new wall works much better. The perspective view looking into the room from the pocket door is much more dynamic and lively, whereas it was a sort of static, flat arrangement, with it placed against the new wall.
I fear that the TV will compete with the adjacent mantel, no?
Cody, I am planning a pair of period-correct gas/electric swing-arm sconces to each side of the mantel.
The sconces to each side of the bed will be new and contemporary (as no sconces were there originally. Indeed, there was no wall there originally!).

You should have a slab of marble cut to top the radiator in this room! It’s practically BEGGING to be a place to sit!

The radiator would have had a marble top originally.
The tv wouldn’t bother me but if you’re worried about it you can look into the mirrors that can go in front of the tv and look like a normal mirror when the tv is off, or the Samsung frame TVs. They are pricy but they are framed art even when the tv is off.

I like the set in the room MUCH better now that I can see it there. The wood finish matches your pocket doors perfectly. I can’t wait for you to remove the dark stain and get back to the original faux finish. You made the right choice in following your heart. I like the way you have angled the bed and I feel like it shows it in a very dramatic way. I still hope you will decide to add silk drapes behind the headboard. I agree with the idea of creating custom tops to protect your dresser and washstand. However, I think these should be made of marble to match the marble you plan to place on top of the radiator. That way all horizontal surfaces will be cohesive and protected.

Stellar set! Wherever the bed ends up, make sure there’s outlets for phone charging on either side, may as well fish some wire down for outlets when you do the sconces. And holy cow, a bedroom so large it has two radiators? That’s palatial!
This is absolutely perfect! Angling the bed makes the room flow beautifully. Do you already have a waiting list for bookings? If so, I want to be on it. 🙂 I’ll bring my guitar with me. I dream of singing in the stairway hall. I’m sure the acoustics are amazing!
I like the bed at an angle, and it was a very common practice. My great grandmother had five square bedrooms, and every bed was at an angle in a corner.
If you haven’t already put a glass top on the wash stand, you should put a marble one on, to match the one on top of the radiator!
Ok I may retract my comment now that I am looking harder at the photo of the wash stand next to the mantle. With the fireplace’s original tile, I think a marble top to the wash stand would clash and a glass top showing the wood finish would compliment the fireplace tiles better.
