The Cross House was built in 1894. It is located at 526 Union Street, in Emporia, Kansas. I purchased the house in March 2014.

CH: Day 61

Heat-wise, Wednesday was even more brutal than Tuesday. Quite sensibly, I stayed home in air-conditioned comfort. Thursday though was predicted to be a bit more reasonable so I…bravely…ventured out. Note: I am of Scottish descent and, thus, genetically predisposed to dying for a good cause.     The ends of the top window trim had…

CH: Day 60

Tuesday was tough. Almost 100-degrees. Ross not happy. I had ZERO desire to be outside but that whole…you know…Baby Step Method™ idea kept going through my head. Just do a little something. Who came up with such bullshit? Oh…   The next thing to do was to get the top trim of the big window…

CH: Day 58

Not fun. As such, my plan is to make a shift. If I move ahead with re-installing the entry in the adjacent NW corner, I could then remove the deck, and re-install it in the NW corner. This would mean that the scaffolding under the turret could be at ground level,…

CH: Day 56

The window had just been tacked in place. I removed it, installed flashing to each side (the right flashing had to be careful inserted behind the extant siding), put the window frame back, leveled it, and screwed it in place till the end of time. I had to pry out, just a bit,…

An Unexpected Gathering. Involving A Minx.

The back story: 1992. An event almost destroyed me.  1996. In April I was homeless. That month I left Newport, Rhode Island, with a backpack. I had no idea of where I would end up. I was, as I thought about it, a feather on the wind of god. In June I learned about a…

Moving Day

Yesterday was intense, man. Intense! Not only did the circa-1921 entry of the Carriage House get traded for the large window but furniture was moved around and about.

CH: Day 53

Are ya’ sitting down? Is your seat-belt strapped on? Do you have a glass of celebratory wine?                         Tomorrow, if the heat does not melt me, I will concentrate on infilling the missing siding. I will use the window as a door until the…

CH: Day 51

Unlike Friday, which was VERY hot and VERY humid…sapping the life out of me…today was still hot (around 90) but not at all humid and with a consistent breeze. It was lovely. I even mowed the lawn!

CH: Day 49

It was hot today: 92-degrees. It was humid humid humid today. Ross unhappy. Ross not very motivated. Ross did though remove the tacked-in-place 1894 crown, stripped it of many layers of paint, sanded it, and reinstalled it. Baby Steps™, baby. Ross happy. Justin and Scott came by. We spent an hour reviewing things. They think…

CH: Day 45

Next week…I hope…the entry will be removed. Then the large window can be installed, centered under the turret. The large window has a leaded-glass diamond-paned transom. This has been restored but I cannot, at the moment, pay for it. So it will not return to the house for now. This wall will be primed…
