CH: Day 86

Yesterday, I woke with all my windows covered with dew. So much so that I could not see out. Stepping outside, it felt like I was assaulted. The heat and humidity (70%) were intense. I thought: I’m staying inside today!

Around 11Am thoughI noticed that my windows were now clear. Oh! I checked the humidity. Now 48%.

By 1PM it was down to 28%. I no longer felt assaulted being outside. So, I decided to brave a trip to the Cross House.

I installed the original upper trim to the entry (the white board), now reduced in width. And got tarpaper behind it. In order to begin installing siding I first need to get drip cap trim atop the white trim. I have none though. So, I ruthlessly…

…tore off the drip cap from the north window. It had been reduced inward width when the vinyl was installed to it needed to be redone anyway. I am hoping Dr. Doug will mill me some new drip cap.

And that…was that. By 4PM I was no longer fully shaded and thought: AC. I need AC.

But, I was just a tiny bit more ahead.

Today? I stayed inside.

Tomorrow? I am gonna brave another trip to the Carriage House. Pray for me.

Wise move listening to your body! This summer has been truly brutal.

Absolutely brutal. I grew up with ocean breezes. This inland thing is killing me.

Here in the DC area it’s been 95 degrees with 95 % humidity for ages. On the few days the humidity is lower, it actually goes UP at night as the temp falls. And like you, I have so much outdoor work to do!

I am truly a convert to the babysteps method. Today I went out four times for short periods. I did a little each time. I planted radishes and marigolds in the front garden where there were open spots. I pulled grass and weeds in the back. I moved pots around to pull more grass and in preparation for clearing and organizing an area, hopefully tomorrow. I worked for maybe 30 to 60 min each time. In the end it added up to a few hours. Babysteps, man, babysteps.

So glad to read you are being careful in the heat and the humidity.

I’ll be selfish and say I want to see you finish the Carriage House, the Cross House and move in. I want to see every room decorated and furnished. I want to see it all done and you have many years of leisure to enjoy it. But not at the expense of your health. So take care of yourself, take it easy and babystep it but only when you feel healthy enough to do so. Every little bit is a little bit. You taught me that.

Ross, I am curious to understand this, ( . . .the white board), now reduced in width”. Original to what? I was understanding that the door was not original. But did the entire original doorway have the two sidelights and a different door and that is why the white board is now reduced in width? Do I understand that the entire doorway is original to the carriage house conversion? The carriage house seems so adulterated at times, that it is very hard to picture it original. Loving the progress!

Be careful, Ross. I can’t believe the humidity even goes that low in Kansas. Here in mid Illinois it was 88 degrees outside at 9 a.m. today ( felt like 100) with 77% humidity. The saying “dry heat is better then wet heat” must be true…but in Illinois we will never know. I feel Wisconsin calling me.
Maybe putz around in the big house today?

    Poor hot Ross
