I’ve yet to process one central question:

HOW did Harris get about 14 millions fewer votes than 2020 Biden?

HOW was this possible?

HOW did Harris get just a tiny bit more votes than Hillary, who suffered from a ton of R-created baggage and 3 decades of vilification?

HOW?

We all saw the massive enthusiasm for Harris, the massive crowds, the unprecedented donations of a billion dollars in just a few months, we all loved her VP pick, and the enthusiasm was at 2008 levels. And she had a stellar GOTV effort while Trump had none.

So, HOW?

A lot of people are saying it’s the result of misogyny. I don’t buy this. While this is certainly true of the Republican party, it’s not true of Democrats. After all, we voted for Hillary more than any white man in history.

I’ve ignored most news today but one story caught my eye: It’s the economy, stupid.

It may be, may, that millions of voters, unhappy with the economy and the cost of groceries, viewed Harris as part of Bidenomics, and blamed her.

But…but…this would, I will guess, only be true for R voters.

So, HOW?

How the fuck did 14 million Democrats NOT vote for Harris? Particularly with millions of women LIVID about Dobbs, and millions of newly registered voters fired up for Harris?

HOW?

Fraud would explain things much better, methinks, but Democrats won’t go there, and Trump (and Putin) know this.

“When somebody tells you who they are, believe them.”

When something does not ring true, believe your common sense.

It doesn’t ring true. But HOW in the world can we prove fraud?

  2. Cindy Belanger on November 6, 2024 at 7:46 pm

I keep asking myself these same questions. I keep looking for someone, somewhere to start an investigation. Something isn’t right. But I have found nothing. I keep hoping there is something going on in the background and they are keeping it quiet until they find proof. That is giving me hope, even if it’s a long shot.

My granddaughter who is 6 was talking to a little boy at school. He said I’m voting for Trump. My granddaughter said don’t vote for Trump, he’s a bad guy. I’m voting for the lady. How do her parents tell her that the bad guy won and how will they reassure her everything will be all right? What about all the American children, this isn’t fair to them. I just want to cry.

  3. Nora on November 6, 2024 at 7:46 pm

I had the same thoughts Ross. It just doesn’t make sense and I don’t trust them… kept on waiting for something to evidence they did something dishonest, or an error. Anything!…Crickets.
How can we be such a hot hateful mess? Today is one of the hardest of my lifetime. I am angry and sad and…so much more, all unpleasant.

I followed the Harris/Walz campaign, and my lovely wifw and I voted for them as many times as we could. I have found the post-mortems so far to be interesting, and I can see the truth in them.

It *was* the economy. I was concerned that the Harris/Walz campaign was not addressing economic complaints such as the price of eggs and other specific things–with quick explanations as they arose. The pandemic with its job and supply-chain disruptions, the shortage of, for example, eggs due to vaccine development and manufacture and avian flu, and ignoring the relatively hidden monthly year-over-year inflation rates and using exaggerated 12-month rates. I understand that such explanations for specific problems would be either too complicated or too pat, but an overall diagram of the causes of inflation and actual graphs–along with links and QR codes to a Here’s What Happened website would have done a lot to show that economic concerns were on the radar, acknowledged and considered.

They never tried to show that the “Bidenomics” of the GOP never existed, and that the U.S. survived the pandemic with the strongest economy in the world (along with the world’s second-highest COVID death rate over 100,000, after Peru).

On the other hand, everything they they did talk about was some combination of theoretical, vague, and–for people who followed her campaign–too spot-on. Voters couldn’t wait for a law to stop price-gouging to make it through Congress and get signed. Or for any other laws to help voters survive the economy.

The voting patterns of the various demographic groups were a revelation. I’ll not accuse the DNC of taking a lot for granted and being tone-deaf, but they might as well have been, based upon the figures.

I hate to say it, but a huge slice of the campaign’s audience was people for whom bodily autonomy, buying a home, and the threat of militarized physical and spiritual management of the population weren’t on the grocery list.

Because she was a horrible candidate who had no confidence in herself, not exactly who people want for the leader of the free world. Maybe next time, put someone on the ballot who actually got a few votes in a primary.

    • David Franks on November 9, 2024 at 3:28 am

Kamala Harris was a fine candidate with the wrong message, for which strategists were responsible. She had—and still has—plenty of self-confidence. After all, she spoke to tens of thousands of people at a time, which surely shows more self-confidence than, say, posting anonymous comments in another person’s blog.

During her campaign for 2020, Harris raised about $42 million by December 3, 2019, when she dropped out of the race.

Seven Democratic candidates raised more to waaaay more than Harris did:
      Joe Biden — $1.62 Bn
      M Bloomberg — $1.1 Bn
      T Steyer — $345.2 M
B Sanders — $211.2 M (with assistance extorted from the DNC)
      E Warren — $142.4 M
      P Buttigieg — $99.9 M
      A Klobuchar — $55.4 M
Neither having money nor not having money is an indicator of suitability for office. Being selected as a running mate is a better indicator.

A few votes in a primary? Kamala Harris got 81 million votes in a real election.
      — She has been “a heartbeat away from the presidency” since 2021; if Biden had died, she’d already be the president.
      — It is customary in both parties for the sitting vice president to become the nominee in the upcoming election if the president cannot or does not run.
      — None of the people who were suggested as candidates showed any interest in stepping up as an alternative candidate.
      — The convention delegates (who had been chosen by voters) quickly supported her as the presidential candidate even as other candidates were being suggested.
      — The party had only 28 days to establish their presidential and vice-presidential candidates in time for the convention.
      — Had a viable alternative candidate wished, they could have called for an open convention. (The last contested Democratic Party convention was in 1968; some of us remember how well that turned out.)

      • Beth H on November 18, 2024 at 9:09 am

Thank you – I agree with your comments almost completely, although I believe the only candidate to raise more than Harris was Biden. She raised $1.4B from the numbers I heard. And she did it very quickly. (I know that we, on a fixed income and about to start Social Security, gave more than we ever have to a political campaign…. in dribs and drabs over the course since July.) I can’t understand how the message of combating price gouging didn’t resonate with those who are complaining about grocery store prices – she would have done something about it, while trump will just encourage more of it because it’ll enrich the stockholders.

I still do NOT believe that Dems “stayed home” as they’re saying, and I hope to God there are some investigations going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about yet. Knowing how close this would be, and knowing how damn important it was to keep trump, that POS human scum, away from the seat of (world) power again… that anyone skipped this election makes zero sense.

    Never believe polls.
Lots of D’s were unhappy with the economy, too…
    and the border crap….
Shouldn’t have the abortion issue as the most important talking point.
Harris couldn’t hold a candle to Clinton…..can’t you see that???
T tried to cry ‘foul’ in 2020….got him in a lot of trouble(H tried, too, in ’16..shrug)
    Still so surprised….
    Fingers crossed……..

  8. mlaiuppa on November 7, 2024 at 6:01 am

    How?

Well, misogyny for one. Some people still can’t bring themselves to vote for a woman.

Racism for another. Woman of color? Double whammy.

Then there are the one issue voters. They don’t like Bidens stand on Israel or Palestine, never mind that Trump would be worse.

Then there are just the plain old uninformed stupid. They have some rosy memory of life under Trump was so good because he’s told them over and over. Retention is weak with this group. They don’t understand that Biden has brought down the inflation from Covid, employment is up, etc. But all they know is the price of gas is up (it isn’t) and burgers at McDonald’s cost more.

What burns me are those demanding one thing or another and even when they get it they don’t vote for it. For instance, the blacks that demanded Biden choose Kamala as VP and then didn’t vote for him. Those that demanded that Biden step down and Kamala be the nominee and then didn’t vote for her.

There are plenty of other reasons but I think it comes down to misogyny, racism and just plain stupidity. And you can’t fix stupid.

What could have helped? Well, maybe Biden announcing way in advance that he would not be running for a second term and allowing an open primary, thus leaving plenty of time for the nominee to campaign. But I wouldn’t blame Biden. There is plenty of blame to go around since at least 2000.

Democrats need to start to plan long term, like 10, 20 and 50 years into the future and stop just planning for the next election.

    • Rhonda@HomerRidge on November 7, 2024 at 8:00 am

Interesting analysis Mary. Here in WI our Senator won by roughly the amount that Trump did. So why didn’t all those voting for Tammy Baldwin also vote for Harris? My theory is that she didn’t have the name recognition and thus less confidence in her abilities to do the work. People worried about the economy went with Trump due to this constant message that he could take them back to “better” times. Harris’ economic message never got off the ground. We were getting a daily dose of Trump’s message that he would “handle the economy”
better long before true campaigning ever started and people apparently believed it even though the Biden administration was doing the real work.
I’m not holding my breath on uncovering of fraud as the answer. That’s the simple excuse that the Trumpers took in 2016 but there are so many more efforts taken to prevent fraud now.
If you look at county by county numbers in battlegrounds, Trump got his numbers by little percentage increases in mostly red areas and even some small gains in blue areas while Harris underperformed compared to Biden and Clinton. I looked at this same data trend in 2015 and in WI that was clearly why Biden won here. It was pleasing then to see all the blue embedded in our red counties and frightening this time to see how it changed.
I suspect in the coming year there’s going to be a lot of “buyer’s remorse” among the population that should have supported Harris, but didn’t, as Trump’s true plans become reality for all of us. We are in for another rough patch.

      • Karen on November 7, 2024 at 9:07 am

You are right, Rhonda. I think fraud came to mind because it was so unbelievable that so many people would vote for Harris. It’s always the economy with Mr. and Mrs. Average (wh don’t like or follow politics much and have short memories). Bill Clinton said it best, and I’ve been saying it for months. I refuse, however, to lay blame on the Democrats. Sure, there are a few things that could have been done better. But Harris fought a good campaign (with a lot against her at the start). Biden would have lost, too. And I refuse to be ashamed. I did everything I could, and so did most of the Democrats I know. We fought a very good fight. I am allowing myself time to be sad and worried. And then, I’ll see what, if anything I can do. I take some comfort in knowing this was not my fault.

  9. Stew on November 7, 2024 at 6:50 am

You may correct suspecting fraud but look at historical vote totals. Harris is in line with them. 2020 is the outlier.

  10. Beth H on November 7, 2024 at 12:19 pm

I won’t hazard a guess as to what happened… I’m still too depressed and angry and defeated. My Latino gay cousin and his Filipino husband are probably at risk, and my own gay unmarried daughter may never have the chance to marry the love of her life. trump will never face consequences for the crimes he’s inflicted on us. Viktor Orban has spoken with trump and crowed that “we have big plans for the future!” which means turning us into a Hungary-look-alike. Nick Fuentes, that disgusting white supremacist, posted “Your body, my choice! Forever!” to gloat that men now control women’s bodies.

I am too damn tired to fight. I just want to leave even though I feel too old to start over somewhere else.

    • Kate R on November 7, 2024 at 12:28 pm

US youngsters need to step up to the plate for this era of resistance. I’m exhausted after the past decade. I live in a remote area that’s a pretty good retreat but considering going overseas anyway. It may be my last chance for international travel anyway.

      • Beth H on November 18, 2024 at 9:15 am

I hope that they (US youngsters) DO step up – they’ll be living with the repercussions of this election for the rest of their lives, likely. I have two daughters in their 20s, and they are not white, not born here (though legal first generation immigrants), not Christian and one is gay. I am scared to death for them. It’s now two weeks after the election, and I’m still feeling just as angry, defeated and depressed as I was on election night. I’m in a blue state (thank God), but I don’t feel we’re safe anyway. trump will try to come after and punish blue states first.

        • Karen on November 18, 2024 at 9:18 am

I agree. I find it very hard to believe that Dems “stayed home.” We knew how important this election was.

    • Dan on November 9, 2024 at 8:52 am

I want to leave too, but it isn’t simple. I’m so sick of people not realizing fact from fiction. Trumpers are so afraid of immigrants and believing there are MILLIONS storming the border. Do any of them realize what that would like? But yet they drank the kool-aid and they will be shocked when the recession hits. Shocked when gas prices don’t go back down. I currently pay 3.49 a gallon. In a year, I say it will be higher. Trumpers need to get their heads out of their asses.

  11. Kate R on November 7, 2024 at 12:24 pm

I am mystified and appalled. And still devastated and speechless this morning.

  12. Dan on November 7, 2024 at 1:50 pm

All I can say is, I hope the trumpers are happy. I hope they will be happy when the price of goods sky rocket. I hope they will be happy when their daughter has a miscarriage and needs a D&C and is told it’s illegal.

    • Beth H on November 7, 2024 at 1:54 pm

      They’ll still blame Biden/Harris somehow.

    • Lisa on November 16, 2024 at 10:39 pm

A DNC is not illegal. Nor is it an abortion.

      • Ross on November 17, 2024 at 10:01 am

Lisa, women are being denied D&Cs.

Basically, all health care for women is under attack by Republicans.

        Remember:

        Democrats HELP

        Republicans HARM.

        • mlaiuppa on November 18, 2024 at 11:15 pm

I think we’ve moved beyond that, given what is happening to women now.

          Democrats PROTECT

          Republicans KILL.

      • Dan on November 17, 2024 at 4:09 pm

Depends on the state you live in.

      • Beth H on November 18, 2024 at 9:21 am

Tell that to the doctor who turns your daughter away when she’s becoming septic, and tells her “We can’t help you yet” because he/she is worried about being prosecuted for that procedure. Women have already died, and it will only get worse if they manage to push through the national abortion ban they’re salivating over. One of my friends has a 29 year old single daughter who has made the decision in the last two weeks to have her tubes tied – she no longer wants to have or raise a child in this country. (And she’s white, straight and Christian – exactly who they want to procreate in this new Gilead.) I can’t say I blame her. I used to hope for grandchildren (my daughters are in their 20s also) but now I hope they stay unencumbered just in case they have to leave quickly… which is not such a far reach to believe.

  13. Sara Montclair on November 8, 2024 at 1:11 pm

    Hi –
I’ve not commented before, but as a former Democrat recently enrolled Independent, I am moved to reply to your question “How?”. In my opinion Harris lost this election for the same reason I changed my enrollment – because everyday Americans do not believe that a Progressive agenda addresses the issues of importance to them. And trying to shove that agenda down their throats (as Biden said “We have to convince them”) resulted in what happened Tuesday.

How did Trump get so much of the urban/minority vote? Unchecked riots and vandalism destroyed countless communities. People with limited resources were terrorized by lawlessness right outside their doors, and then had the added burden of losing the neighborhood businesses upon which they relied. Other communities with the same limited resources were targeted as sanctuaries for waves of undocumented immigrants. The takeaway in my mind is that struggling, hard-working and law-abiding Americans need to be acknowledged and supported. The defunding the police movement supported by so many Democrats ignored this very real concern.

In closing, I fear that, on a national level, the Democratic party will not succeed again until decision-makers realize that they cannot tell people what their priorities SHOULD be, but by recognizing and endorsing what their values and concerns ARE.

    • Ross on November 8, 2024 at 6:47 pm

      Hi, Sara.

      You wrote:

“everyday Americans do not believe that a Progressive agenda addresses the issues of importance to them.”

Can you tell me what “a Progressive agenda” is?

      Let me guess:
      Banning gasoline cars
      Banning electric stoves
      Defunding the police
Allowing abortion on demand, even at 9 months
      Taking all guns away
Allowing sex surgeries on children in schools
      Open borders

And I’m sure I’ve missed many other things.

The problem, Sara? There is no such thing as “a Progressive agenda”. There IS though a Republican version of a “Progressive agenda”. This version though isn’t real. It’s all made up to scare people and and you fell for it.

This is what Democrats and liberals (such as me) fight for:
      Secure borders.
A path for Dreamers to become citizens
A fair tax rate where all people pay the same rate (such as teachers NOT paying a higher rate then billionaires)
Good infrastructure (something Trump never pursued)
      Lower costs for medicines
A higher minimum wage (opposed by Republicans)
      Reduced student debt
      Health care for all
      Cleaner water and air
      Equal rights for all
      American jobs
      Strong borders

The question, Sarah, is why aren’t you for these things which help you, me and many millions of Americans?

You wrote that “Unchecked riots and vandalism destroyed countless communities.” I’m unaware of a single city in America which was destroyed by unchecked riots and vandalism. Can you forward images of this assertion?

Can you also forward a video of a single Democrat advocating to defund the police? This was said by a third-party candidate years ago and the media and GOP pounced on it. But, again, it isn’t reality based.

You talk about people being terrorized. Like the millions of people terrorized by the events of 1/6? And the millions of people terrified of Trump taking away their health care? And women terrorized by Republican politicians controlling their bodies? And the women dying because of Republican politicians? And the families and children terrorized by the preventable deaths of women denied the care they need?

But you seem unconcerned about these actual, real terrors. Why is that?

Sarah, I’ve previously posted about a very long list of things Democrats have done to help you, me, and millions of Americans. There is NO such list for the Republican party. They don’t help us, they only help the super rich. Are you OK with this, too?

Yes, Biden did say: “We have to convince them”. But he wasn’t talking about a “Progressive agenda”. And how can he shove a non-existent agenda down the throat of anybody?

Lastly, you ask: “How did Trump get so much of the urban/minority vote?” The answer is simple. He used the Nazi Playbook: scare people.

      • Beth H on November 18, 2024 at 9:32 am

Your response to Sarah is perfect. Harris would have enacted policies that would have HELPED so many… tax breaks for new parents, combating price gouging, help with a first time home buyer downpayment, healthcare, and more. Instead, we get the party that rolls back child labor laws and wants to gut Social Security and Medicare, make women second class citizens (and even then, probably only 2nd class if they’re “breeders”… God only knows what they plan for women who decide to remain child-free), remove rights from the LGBTQ community and enact laws based on one religion, give tax cuts to the super rich. They ignored all that and elected a man who spoke about violence, performed a mock act of oral sex on a microphone stand only a short while before the election (looks like he was OVER CONFIDENT of winning…. hmmmm… what did he know?), and turned one of his town halls into a 39 minute demonstration of his mental decline with swaying to music onstage (“Who the hell wants to hear questions?”) There is NO WAY this man was elected without fraud. I know too damn many Republicans who would not vote for him after Jan. 6th, and they did not change their minds… especially with the insane way he was behaving during the last few months of the campaign. Obvious mental decline.

    • mlaiuppa on November 9, 2024 at 2:18 am

I’d like to know where you live where you witnessed “unchecked riots and vandalism that destroyed countless communities.” and “People with limited resources terrorized by lawlessness right outside their doors” and “losing neighborhood businesses.”

I live in one of the top ten largest cities in the U.S. and right on the border. We have an immigrant population not only from Mexico and farther south but also from Africa, Asia and even Russia/Ukraine. They are law abiding, hard working people who love their adopted country. They are likely more patriotic than those born here as they not only made a choice to come but also sacrificed to come.

We haven’t had any riots, checked or unchecked. We have not had vandalism nor have any of our communities been destroyed by it. No one is being terrorized and the only family businesses that are being destroyed is when a Starbucks builds yet another unnecessary coffeeshop right across the street from a Mom and Pop that has been there for decades. That’s corporate greed.

We are on the border and do not have “waves” of undocumented immigrants from anywhere.

Our population is 1.388 million as of 2023 and our unemployment rate as of Aug 2024 is 4.9%.

Do we have undocumented immigrants? Probably. But they keep their heads down, are quiet and law abiding so as to avoid attention. It is proven that they are more law abiding than your average white Christian male.

While none of Harris’ programs or policies would benefit me personally, I know the impact President Felon will have on not only me but others. I don’t just vote selfishly for myself, I vote for the benefit of others. It’s called altruism and lately has become a trait of only the Democratic Party. I don’t get Social Security and never will but I vote to protect it for others that do. I do have medicare but that is through my employer (before I retired) and I just stayed on their plan. If medicare goes away I just pay them more directly but the plan will not change. I don’t have children or grandchildren but I vote for better schools and pay for them with my taxes. I vote for the benefit of farmers, ranchers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters even though I am not one and don’t know any. I am long beyond pregnancy but I still vote for a woman’s right to choose because I don’t want to see women die from preventable complications. I am not gay or trans but I vote for their rights because I understand the biology of being born intersex and how damaging it can be. (I have a friend in the UK and have learned a lot). I am retired but I vote to help those still working. I am white but vote for the rights and protections to those who are not. I was born in the U.S. but I vote for the rights and opportunities of those that wish to live in this country too.

I prefer to live under a Democratic Republic with a rule of law where everyone is equal.

That no longer exists, or at least it won’t after January 20, 2026.

Benito Mussolini put it simply: Fascism should be more correctly be called Corporatism for it is a merger of the State and corporate power”

That’s what those struggling, hard-working, law abiding voters voted for. Fascism. They were warned and they ignored the warning. They drank the Koolaid.

Elon Musk will be pulling the Felon’s puppet strings. Big oil will buy the Grand Canyon to drill for oil, or anywhere else they like. Kiss the National Preserves and Parks goodbye as well as clean air, clean water, our abundant wildlife and pristine open spaces. We now have our own home grown oligarchs and they just bought the presidency. All any Corporation or uber wealthy person that wants something has to do is offer President Felon money and they can have whatever they want. And he’ll profit from it because…Immunity. There will be no accountability EVER.

Perhaps those struggling, hard-working, law abiding people should be reminded of what their priorities should be since it is their self-centered and uninformed selfishness that elected an authoritarian dictator that will dismantle our government and destroy what programs the Democrats have put in place to help them in their every day lives. They voted against their own best interests. And I’m sick of it.

I will not donate one penny to their whining Go Fund Me when they lose their jobs, their healthcare, their house is in foreclosure, they get evicted, or whatever. They will get what they voted for. Perhaps they need a big fat reality check. Embracing ignorance and living in a bubble of Fox news and OAN got them where they are. Just like any addiction you have to hit rock bottom before you can acknowledge you have a problem and work to overcome it. I think four years of MAGA rule will have a sobering effect on a lot of those struggling, hard-working, law abiding Americans that were too lazy to do their homework before they entered the voting booth.

You think a wall, deportations and tariffs are going to make life better for anyone but the oligarchs? They have the money to survive inflation, recession or a greater depression than FDR had to contend with…which gave us Social Security which many people will lose if the MAGA administration has any success implementing Project 2025. You think any of those oligarchs didn’t have toilet paper during Covid? You think they were deprived of anything they wanted? They suffered no shortages, no supply chain issues. They had whatever they wanted, they just paid more for it because they could. When you have billions you don’t care about struggling, hard-working, law abiding Americans.

If those voters you speak of’s values and concerns are misogyny, bigotry, racism, xenophobia, isolationism, hate, retribution, cruelty and vindictiveness with gullible blind obedience to a demented old conman-sexual predator-convicted felon-seditionist, then I’m glad the Democratic party has refused to pander to the basest values and concerns of those selfish voters.

Let them eat cake….if they have any money left to pay for it.

      • Karen on November 9, 2024 at 6:32 am

Well said indeed. I have family and friends in Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon, both places in which there were riots after George Floyd was killed by police. Riots affected only a small area in both places. On a personal level, I am most concerned with clean water, clean air, and untouched wilderness — all of which are likely to disappear with 2025 policies. I am also concerned for the large Latino population of our little town, many of whom are undocumented and who do the jobs that no one else seems to want. Although most of the other proposed policies don’t affect me directly, I am concerned about those who are affected, including gay friends. If you want to throw around blame, I blame the lies on Fox, NewNation, NewMax, X, and similar platforms, lies that a large majority of people, including, apparently, Sara.

I don’t think it will matter if you are documented or not or born here. If you’ve got an accent of an kind or are not white and Christian, they are eventually going to deport you, legal or not. They’ll just do it and then deal with the legalities later. After all, they’ve never been held accountable for past crimes so why should they fear the courts now? They own the highest court in the land.

I think in the next four years the only wolves and coyotes left will be in zoos. And the prairie grouse will be extinct.

Thank you, Mary. I fully agree.

I live in a blue state, and I know there WILL be resistance to what trump and his minions try to enact and enforce… and I think we will be amongst the first he sends the National Guard into to break that resistance. I read somewhere that Viktor Orban was on the same path as trump – won one election, lost the next, and then came to power again in Hungary. At that point, after the second election, it only took him TWO YEARS to dismantle Hungary’s democratic government. trump has the next two years to confer with his mentors in Hungary and Russia to dismantle what we’ve had for 250 years… and I am sure he’ll manage it. Those saying ‘we’ll take back Congress in 2026’ lack the understanding of what he wants to do… and what has been done in other countries that have had their democracies fall. It can and will happen here.

Beth, I also have zero confidence that there will be an election in 2026.

A small silver lining that I have already discovered, in regards to the economy, is that all of these terrified conservatives, fearful of a Harris win and leery to spend money, have started opening their wallets again for frivolous purchases.

The orange man will take office in January, wave his magic wand (“dictator on day one”!), and make everything better again, so, they’re finally letting go of some of their cash.

I have seen a HEFTY increase in my online sales since the election, particularly to southern and traditionally R leaning states, whereas it having been a dry dry desert for quite some time now.

Coincidence? Methinks, no. I have seen a massive uptick in sales at my 9-5 as well, in remodeling and renovations.

It’s all a placebo effect, of course, and probably not a long winded one at that, though I’m happy to take their money.

With the guarantee of cheaper groceries and gas on the way, it’s no big deal now to shell out for pretty vintage lights on ebay or a tacky kitchen remodel. /s

I’m doing kinda the opposite. I don’t think the Biden economy honeymoon will last a year. Maybe not even six months. And the price of gas and groceries isn’t going to go down. It will stay steady and then start to skyrocket.

I have a very tiny stock portfolio. Like $20,000. I’m going to be selling it off as each stock hits a high and then just letting the money sit in the account. At least there it will make a little interest. I remember what happened the last time. as soon as the Obama economy dropped after about a year, the stock market dropped and I lost a lot of value. I’m going to try to reclaim as much of that as I can and then just sit out the next drop. And drop it will. The stock market will not survive in some sort of bubble. When the tariffs kick in, inflation soars and the economy tanks, the stock market will drop too. No sales is no revenue which is no profits which is no dividends to stockholders.

My tiny portfolio might not be much but $20,000 is better than $10,000 or $5,000.

I’m also going to be buying plenty of wood and supplies now for fence repair and such because prices are going to go up. Buying some fruit trees too. I have a stockpile of Mason jars and lids and I know how to use them. Four raised beds and seeds instead of nursery plants and I hope to at least lower my grocery bill somewhat. Already have a year’s worth of pesto and spaghetti sauce in the freezer. I’ll be stocking up toilet paper in the garage and staples like pasta, sugar and flour. Butter in the freezer when there’s a sale. By reducing on those I’ll be able to afford the eggs and milk that will increase in price.

Unlike some of the voters I remember the Felon’s economy after the Obama honeymoon and before Covid.

It’s going to be a long four years. Possibly five or six until the economy recovers.

      • Ross on November 12, 2024 at 5:11 pm

Mary, every Republican I’ve ever talked with thinks the Obama economy was terrible.

They ignore the record month-to-month economic growth under Obama. And forget the disaster George W. handed him.

They think Trump energize the economy on Day 1. I have to stop myself from laughing out loud whenever I hear that.

In reality, the economy slowed a bit under Trump’s first two years as compared to Obama’s last 2 years. No Republican believes that.

The stock market also soared under Obama. It continued to do well, but not as well, under Trump. No Republican believes either.

The Biden economy is the envy of the world, particularly considering the mess Biden inherited from Trump. No Republican believes this.

The collapse of the economy under Trump cannot be blamed on Covid. As, other countries which better managed the crisis better also better managed their economies. Gee, it’s like being a good manager matters

As you know, Trump’s incredibly stupid tariff plans will wreck the economy. His deportation plans will devastate further.

Indeed, the Republican party has ZERO idea of how to fuel a good economy. Just look at history. Significantly more job growth happens under Dems than Rs. And the deficit is only reduced under Ds, not Rs.

And reducing taxes for the rich and corporations is yet another proven disaster but that’s exactly what will happen under Trump. Again.

Note, too, how Trump never created an Infrastructure plan? Even when he had absolute power his first two years. But Biden did.

        Sigh.Sigh.

        • mlaiuppa on November 12, 2024 at 5:42 pm

          Oh, I’m aware.

Usually a new administration inherits the previous one’s economy and it lasts for about a year.

That’s the economy the Felon inherited from Obama that everyone things he created. They also attribute the 2020 economy to Biden even though he didn’t take office until Jan 20, 2021. In between it was already going down, even before Covid. Covid just covered up the incompetence on the economy by replacing it with the gross incompetence regarding the pandemic.

And they ignore that the Republicans damage the economy every time they are in control or that when the Democrats are back in control they fix it.

Well, I think that is going to be a bit different this time. The damage will happen faster and be a lot more devastating.

The Felon and his cadre of Deplorables will revoke the ACA, the Chips act, the Infrastructure act etc. There go jobs and healthcare. If he succeeds in forcing the new Senate to recess for over 10 days he’ll just appoint all of the criminals and fascists he wants and they’ll proceed to destroy the country for two years. The decline will be immediate, extreme and devastating.

And all Democrats can do, aside from tying them up in court constantly, is to scream “TOLD YOU SO!” which I highly encourage everyone to do as often as it warrants or invites. Especially to anyone that voted Republican this time around.

And prepare. Prepare like for Covid but more so.

Stock up on whatever might be imported or in short supply or become more costly. If it’s on sale, it’s going in the freezer or the pantry.

Repair and reuse if at all possible and buy used if you must buy. You’re going to see the price of used items go up as demand increases.

Cook as much as you can from scratch as fast food, restaurants and convenience foods from the store all cost more than making it yourself and since we import a lot of fruits and vegetables…do the math.

Let’s try to avoid having to eat dogs and cats.

Milk, eggs, meat and fruits and vegetables have to be bought fresh but you can get around some of that with freezing and preserving and in come cases buying in bulk. But don’t if it might spoil before you can use it all. Try to reduce spoilage but if it does, compost it (except for meat, eggs and dairy) for use in the garden you should start. (Even if it’s just pots)

I’m doing toilet paper and paper towels, sugar, flour, butter. I have a chest freezer and a little dorm fridge with freezer compartment in the garage for overflow. I will be buying on sales and specials and stocking up. Pasta lasts a long time. Making bread is cheaper than buying it. Butter lasts longer if you clarify it. I’ve got Ball jars and lids for canning, I’ve got seed packets that will be viable for 2-3 years, maybe four. I will be ordering more seeds in the spring. They may not go up as they are produced here in the U.S.

I will say the one thing that may happen is anything made in the U.S. that does not involve importation of any part or material might not go up in price. Might.

We are going to be living like survivalists for the next few years. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Hoping I can coax my 2015 minivan to limp through another 5 or 6 years…

Any purchases that I know need to made at this point, I will do BEFORE the trump inauguration. I’m betting holiday sales numbers are going to be GREAT this year, because so many people understand that they’ll be hanging onto their money come January. So many businesses are going to go under once prices jump – even with just the promise of those tariffs before he gets them passed. I do machine embroidery, and new models just came out… all are made overseas. (The chatter on the sewing groups is sort of funny – they’re certain it’s just machines made in China that will increase in price. Good luck with that.) The sewing dealerships that sell those machines probably will not survive what’s coming – the machines were already a niche market, and top of the line could be almost as expensive as a small new car. Most of those businesses are family owned, many have been around 50 years, and they’ll disappear. That means the stores that support the home sewing community (local fabric places and online fabric warehouses) are probably going to go belly up too… which leads to losing little restaurants and delis where the employees of those sewing businesses work go to get their lunch… it’s just a vicious cycle. I doubt there’s a single aspect of our current economy that won’t be hit hard.
